Default Marco - Speak\'s about behind the Scenes of BB

I found this article, and although its old, I suggest you spend the time to read it.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/bigbroth...f-arf-arf.html

I am Marco from Big Brother. I am a drama queen. I am a backstabbing, spiteful, malicious individual. I do not like clowns or maggots. My party trick is making prank phone calls and seal noises; arf, arf, arf. I do not give a **** about anybody else besides myself. I am the biggest bitch on the planet; a **** stirring ex-Samaritan. I am vacuous, shallow and air-headed, incapable of rational, intelligent debate. I have an annoying voice. In a court room I would address the judge as darling. I am vile and repugnant; a despicable, worthless, empty clapping seal to loathe. I am devoid of a single redeeming feature and am bald and ugly.

It will matter a great deal if someone is defined as eccentric, erratic, or mad; a drinker, a drunk, or an alcoholic; a lovelorn admirer or a stalker. Consequences will flow from labelling, consequences that affect not only how one regards oneself and one's position in the world, but also how one may be treated by others. Labelling creates a self. (Maguire, Mike., Morgan, Rob., Reiner, Robert., The Handbook of Criminology, Oxford University Press (3rd edition., 2002)., p.71)

Labels have already been assigned to the fourteen disparate individuals assembled for this years Big Brother 6. Hours of audition footage has been stripped away to compile a minute long audition montage which best reflects the charicatures assigned to each house member. By this stage, producers will already have identified and stipulated to the selected contestants which personality traits they have been acquired to the Big Brethren world for. Big Brother 5 bestowed labels in abundance from day one: the anarchist; the drama queen; the sex siren; the peacemaker; the rude boy, and through selective editorial manipulation these identities were publicly maintained by the producers and adapted, where necessary, for publicity, ratings and financial return. By the mid-audition stage budding contestants partake in an exhaustive interview with producers in which they are categorised into brands.

The drama queen is predominantly asked questions pertaining to bitching and trouble making; the producers chiefly enquire upon the many sexual partners experienced by the sex siren; the anarchist is questioned regarding anarchy and political issues. At this stage these individuals cease to be regarded as 3-dimensional beings by the producers and are directed into readily labelled, disposable commodities for public consumption. There is no doubt upon entry to the Big Brother house what is expected from each contestant and producers will have requested that participants, immediately prior to entry , don't let them down. A great emphasis is placed upon satisfying the Big Brother team in exchange for the opportunity provided. Essentially, participants will come to assume, and be edited to evoke, the roles to which they have been assigned and labelled by Big Brother.

Mark Lawson, quoted by Peter Bazalgette, asserts that participants who are solely chosen to be disliked are then edited to be detested. (Bazalgette, Peter., Billion Dollar Game, Time Warner Books (2005)) The producers' editorial agenda for the fourteen housemates will be most prevalent in the initial weeks in which a scarcer amount of airtime must be carefully delegated between each of the characters and developing relationships. You may dislike [insert name here] now but you will probably despise that person in two weeks' time. With 24 hours of footage and a mere 45 minutes of prime allocated airtime, the producers will scour each days footage for instances which best reflect the entertainment value derived from their selected stereotypes idiosyncrasies. The dippy baby will not be seen to engage in any form of intelligent communication; the peacemaker will rarely be shown to complain about another contestant - these elements will be extracted from the nice posh totty and drama queen instead. It is only towards the latter half of the series, where a greater amount of time can be allocated to each individual, that the remaining survivors will become more fleshed and multi-faceted to the viewing public.

Sadly, the public will very rarely come to appraise more than a glimmer into the psyche kaleidoscope of the majority of contestants and rarely appreciate the complex psychological motivating particulars which governs much of the social interaction in the Big Brother house. Bunny-boiler-like conduct will be criticised in isolation, and not considered in the wider psychological context against an individuals abandonment at a young age; a participant's aggressive behaviour will be condemned and not measured in conjunction with an individuals violent and tormented upbringing. We will be encouraged to boo a contestant who refuses to take orders in a task without taking into consideration the psychological implications which may have arisen as a result of said contestant recently fleeing a war torn, oppressive and violent regime, in the name of entertainment. This is the carefully constructed and manipulated reality of the Big Brother world we are welcomed back to with another batch of labelled commodities, trash heroes and pantomime villains, we are instructed to love and loathe from the outset.

I am Marco Jaye Sabba. I am a diligent law student who aspires towards a first class honours degree. I have played the piano for eight years and have composed my own musical, taking source inspiration from Schonberg and Boublil, Jerry Herman and Alan Menken. I am generous, kind and thoughtful. I was bullied so spitefully at school that I became suicidal. When I grew older I wanted to help others in that position and became a Samaritan. I have a compassionate nature. I would give my last five pound note to a homeless person. I feel and can hurt easily. I am not perfect. I aspire towards becoming a better person. I am this year's DS:BB columnist. I enjoy analysing Big Brother.

That was definitely an interesting article to read, and well-written. Thanks for posting it MS. This is why a lot of HMs come across as one-dimensional sometimes, because they are labelled and given a stereotype by the producers, and are edited according to their stereotype, while everything else about them and their personality is ignored.
