Default Gazza Arrested Under Mental Health Act

Gazza Arrested Under Mental Health Act

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been arrested under the Mental Health Act.

The former Newcastle, Spurs and Lazio midfielder was arrested at the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead last night and sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.

"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no one was injured during the incident."

The Mental Health Act is used when a person is considered to be a danger to themselves or to others.

People arrested under the act can be held for a maximum of 72 hours, usually at a hospital but sometimes at a police station.

A hotel spokesman said Gascoigne had been staying at the hotel for one night and said no damage had been caused.

Gascoigne has had a troubled history of emotional instability and erratic behaviour.

He was famously dubbed "daft as a brush" by then-England manager Bobby Robson at the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Sky News sports presenter Jon Desborough said the arrest was the latest example of "the demons he has had to deal with throughout his life".

He said: "That madcap approach he had in football never managed to make it over to his real life."

Gazza shot to international fame through his performances at Italia 90, famously bursting into tears on the pitch after his booking meant he would not be able to play in the final should England get there.
