I thought we should make a thread that can help people expand their arguments, and give people tip's on how to debate better. I know that I would like to be able to make better arguments.

I know from AS critical thinking I did last year when looking at sources you should use RAVEN in order to evaluate the source

R- Repuatation - Does tthis person have a repuation of lieing?

A - Ability to Observe - Where they their? Was the event at a diffrent time or place?

V - Vested Interest - Do they have a interest to lie or misinterpret the truth in order to protect themselves

E - Expertise - Do they have a paryicular knowledge in that area?

N- Neutrality - If someone has a reason to lie for other reasons that to protect themselves. Eg, Someone who knows other people involved in a dispute, for example, may be liable to side with them or against them depending on their relationship, weakening their credibility.

Just argue. Basically. Some are rubbish at it and some are good , all depending on creativity with words , wit , imaginaiton , and knowledge of the subject being argued. Thats about it. No easy to spell letter theorys. No 12 step programmes.

The ultimate ingredient for a good argument is worthy people to argue with and a worthy subject to argue about.

Good hard facts backed up with a valid opinion presented in an easily understood way. An ability to see the opposing side of the argument is good but the main thing is to type in a clear way and word things properly. None of this RAVEN rubbish.

I ahree with Stu, basically there are no rules, just intelligent people with knowledge about the topic. Simple as.

I think the best way to argue is not to "argue", but to discuss you point coherently with a level of understanding of the subject. Someone who just shouts their opinion until they're blue in the face will never be able to stand their ground in an argument.

Arguments only ever serve any real purpose when someone is able to change or at least get someone else to appreciate their point of view. If both are so closed minded, they walk out of it having learnt nothing and with no extra appreciation for any other argument, then it was kind of pointless really wasn’t it?

But how funny if we all start arguing over what a good argument is in an argument thread!

Exactly, without mediation an argument is completely pointless.

I hate that. If you try and discuss something and people ignore you.

the argument that you win; and the subject matter which you are expert in. if you were discussing (brain surgery) and a sergeon was talking in laymen terms; I'd quit right away. but if it was about; arsenal football club, things would be different; as I know a bit.

guess thats where the problem lies. (knowledge)
