Default I was threatened today

Today I received a threatening Email

It said

Quote:
Hello, graeme.

Listen to me carefully, i don't know what your name is, but i'll find you and i'll cripple you, because this is you who tempted her!!!
She has already gone to hospital, you're next, this is evidence: There was then a link to a Russian website I have not included for safety reasons
I have contacted the ISP and reported it to the police because of the threat of violence, the viewpoint is that it is a new nasty variant of Phishing

Is that your name? It says "hello Graeme" then it says "I don't know your name"?

Sounds...strange.

Who've you been tempting, Sticks? Apart from me, of course...

I'm sorry! I sent it to the wrong person

Seriously though, what sort of people send this sort of stuff whether phishing or not? Very bizarre ...

I did warn you not to get on the wrong side of those cossack dancers.

In all seriousness, these sort of e-mails are disgraceful.

Sorry to hear that.

Sounds like one of those generic , nonsensical emails that come to nothing. Perhaps it was designed as a hook to get you on to that website where their are virus and spywares ready to download to your computer?

Ahhh. So they got all your details from your website. Strange thing to send. They were obviously trying to get you onto their website for some reason. Not a very nice way to do it though.

If you Google the text of the e-mail it brings up other instances of this e-mail. It's spam - it gets your name from your e-mail address - the bit before the @.

So it's spam trying to spread a virus. Not a very nice mail though. I think most people would delete that straight away.

No

I reported it to Yahoo who said it was not really a Yahoo account and they told me how to read the ip address from the header detail. (From the last Received line) and using WHOIS got in touch with Hostaway.com.

I have now forwarded it to them for them to deal with and await their response.

Thanks for that confirmation, the Fraudo.com link was the most helpful. I have a crime number for this, so I wonder if I should call the police back.

Maybe it would be a good idea to let them know.

I got contacted by MK research today following up on this to see how the police handled this case.

I tried to emphasise I had no issue with the person handling the call, but a policy issue that our local police authority does not have a general email address I could have sent a copy of the email with the header details.

Unfortunately because of that I was never able to inform them it was a confirmed scam.
