Default Why Not A Blind Man ? - My Opinions

Ive seen loadss of threads with people saying about the blind man going in the house..

and personally i see no reason why they couldn't.

My friends Dad is blind.. So what ?

He's the same as me or you.. he just can't see.

He has ears.. and a mouth.. he can walk.. he has hands.. he's normal..

Theres another blind man who lives in my village..

Nobody stares when he's walking down the road..

To us he's just one of us..

They're different..

So what?

Some people here are so shallow and opinyanated its unbelievable! x

Yes I can't understand that either. People are just so narrow-minded, they may think blind people are retarded or something. The idea of putting Pete in the house was good (even if the housemate himself was just terrible).
Big Brother needs diversity, that could be a great occasion.

yeah totally agree with you, and i think it would maybe raise people's awareness of blind people and that fact that they're normal!! It helped people understand tourettes with pete.

oh dear... this is just going to keep on going

people are equal yes... but unfortunatly a lot of people are prejuste, sometimes they can't help it but they are... britian isn't a land od equality, and people are going to feel sorry from him/her most likely, if they're a nice person. Look at pete for example. Blind people also can not see there for they can not be treated equally to others. A blind person is less likely to be able to navagite an assault corse without assitance. The producers also have a stict health and safty conduct they have to stick to and already will have to fill in hundreds of forms a series.Unfair, yes , but life is unfair.

I wholeheartedly agree that just because a person is blind it doesn't make them any different to you or me.

However, to quote Sammeth from another thread on the matter:

Quote:
However we have to look at it from a health and safety standpoint. Channel 4 would have to be very careful. Big Brother would have to set safe tasks because its a liability. As with regular sighted housemates, precautians have to be made. But can you imagine how much the press would milk it if a blind contestant got injured? I mean if a regular sighted housemate got injured in a task it would just be "Housemate injured in task." But with a blind man getting injured the press would milk it for all its worth and make it 1000x worse.
It is in the show's best interests to do something like this this year. This year, Big Brother needs to re-establish itself, and sending a blind man into the house could just cause unwanted controversy.

A lot of tasks involve sight, a blind person in the house means those tasks will no longer be able to go ahead meaning potential tasks will have to be cancelled, thus giving us an overall worse series. He/she would have to be catered for in all tasks, and in anything else that happens which involves being able to see, which lets face it, is quite a lot.

It will make the series a lot less enjoyable for me personally, especially as immediately the blind person has the sympathy vote, both from the housemates and viewers. Immediate advantage, something that immediately sets them apart from the rest [just as Pete's tourettes did, the fact Nadia was a transexual, etc] and it's just a generally bad idea.

Plus, the press would have a field day. Minor things will be dramatised, any housemate who argues with the blind person will be immediately disliked by a lot of people. Overall, a terrible idea, and I'd be put off watching.

I totally agree with all of the above.

Like I said before, I have nothing personally against any person that is visually impaired, but it is in the best interests of the show to avoid using handicapped housemates.

i think anyone with a disability has the same rights as someone without a disability to take part in big brother as long as they are put in the house based on the same criteria as the other housemates and if they win, they win for the right reasons (not like pete who did nothing really)

nor i am i, simply saying you can't say people are saying immoral things about blind people, we're not stupid, we know that a persons sight or lack or sight doesn't define a person. THanks!

I don't have a problem with it, I just fear that it will limit tasks.

It would be a lot like Rima on BB Aus...great for the show, but once tasks/competitions roll around it leaves everyone feeling a little awkward. Not that blind people can't do things, they just have to do them in different ways.

So I'm not sold on the blind person. Plus, disabled persons are guaranteed finalists and guaranteed finalists are boring.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, doesn't make them shallow at all.
Just like saying we dont want an old person in the house, not that we dont love them but they cant take place in tasks and press would have a ball if they got injured.

Because it isn't unfair to make such a discrimination ? Come on, the task issue is just rubbish. If the producers have decided to put a blind man in it, they will do everything to make him comfortable but not to favour him.

Putting a blind person in there is just silly. They can easily get hurt, and it will create all kinds of controversy. Why would they do such a thing? To see if he can function like everyone else? Whats the point? And of course it would be unfair. You can bet your asss if he is just nice, nobody will ever nominate him, because theyd be afraid to be diliked on the outside. The reasons why its a stupid idea, are quite clear, and its ignoring those reasons thats narrow minded!

It's not unfair if there is good reason for it which if you read the rest of the thread, I think you will find that there are some pretty valid points. Yes it's good to have diversity but you can have that without it effecting the series in a negative way. Pete was totally different because his tourettes prevented him from doing barely anything. The same is not to be said for a blind person.
