Default Immigrants & Refugees

Time to crack down on these in the UK?

Basically with the rise in the number of them coming over here, its sparked a whole load of rubbish like political correctness, double standards and has started debates on whether traditional British/Christian holidays should be downgraded to minimise offence. Then there is always the argument that they are fast tracked into housing where the average Brit has to wait 6 months to 2 years, given benefits then aren't chased up about finding a job- as Brits are.

I don't have a problem with them but I think if they're going to live in the UK then I think they should live by our laws, but I think British people should still come first for example if they join a housing queue, they should join the end like everyone else does, not fast tracked to the top.

What are your thoughts on them?

Should not be fast tracked into anything.

We should advocate such measures that countries like Aus and NZ have.

My brother seeked immigration into Australia and it took him 4 months with constant contact with the embassy and soo many papers and tests to fill in. Checks were done on his complete background etc. That would weedle out those seeking a 'free ride' from the UK.

NZ is similar, perhaps even more stringent. With a degree your application is fast tracked so that they get the 'best'. They have a "point system" on your application, measuring how many languages you can speak, family links, past credit history etc.

Something similar would be good. We're a country and our human instinct of 'survival of the fittest' comes into play. We don't want people taking our resources unless they put more in for them.

99% of immigrants are law-abiding citizens. There are some that come for the free-ride and it's not fair on them anyway - cos they're usually put into slave labour and underground networks to hide from immigration officers which is a sad way of life for people.

"They take our jobs" Yes, the jobs we don't want to do.

I would rather have a city full of hard working Poles than a city of English lay abouts getting free houses off the back of my taxes.

I think it's good to live in a multicultural society, because although there is the disadvantage of racism in some areas, I think it decreases ignorance and makes people more tolerant and aware of other cultures and religions etc. However, as you mentioned you don't have a problem with them, but the laws they live by.

It's a bit of a vicious circle, but I feel that generally immigrants come to the west for a better life, or because the situation in their home countries are difficult (particularly if they're refugees, as my grandmother was). Foreigners who come here should be willing to find jobs and work, as well as learn the language, if they expect to cope here and be treated at least for the most part like every other citizen.

And, of course, comes the age-old joke... not that it applies wholly to this thread... that the British occupied foreign countries with their empire for centuries. For example, the British empire ruled the Indian Subcontinent since the 1600s, and then left in 1947 - effectively, the countries there became more westernised in some parts. Therefore, some chose to go to England. I think the problem is that ethnic groups tend to segregate in certain areas. And despite what I said earlier, the entire British population is still (may not be spot on but is pretty close) 86% white British, 6% white other, 4% south Asian, 2% black, 1% mixed race and 1% East Asian/other.

"Who said that?" It is the usual lazy argument that is pulled out. I was just getting in first.

Ah right, cos it came after my post I assume you'd meant I'd said it and was confused.

British people should come first.
Nobody should be fast tracked for anything
Lately we hear how more British families are in poverty, well instead of letting immigrants come into the country the government should be looking after the British people first.
I agree with Lauren about we should be like Australia, it took my aunt ages to get into the country they did so many checks. Britain would be better doing something like this

The difference being they are pressured into a job whether they get one or not. Those wanting a job should not just be given them, they should apply for them and be interviewed just like everyone else is.

"I agree with Lauren about we should be like Australia"

Are you not seeing the irony of using Australia in the immigrants argument?

Nope, I can see what you're saying but there is no irony. Its simply comparing two systems of different countries.

A country that was stolen from the indigenous population by immigrants complaining about immigrants coming in. Trust me, there is irony there.

The irony doesn't exist in a modern-day comparison, especially of their law systems.

Plus it applies to all countries. At one point or another they've been invaded. This discussion is about modern-day.

Then that applies to almost every country in the world so no comparison can be made whatsoever between any two systems without it being ironic . Most countries have been invaded and taken over at some point, and as a consequence have become the countries that they are because of the 'invaders' settling there.

I hope none of you are Daily Mail readers

I don't really mind to be honest - and agree with a lot of what Nurse57 and Lauren have said.

The Poles only came to work here out of necessity because of their own country's failing economy. Now that economy is picking up they can't wait to leave this sh*thole of a country.

Great Post. Good incite. I could not have put it better my self.

This country has been multi cultural for as long as any of us can remember. I dont see the big deal regarding immigration; I dont think it's the huge problem so many other think it is.
