Default Surfers go mad for footy and Big Brother

Football fever and Big Brother have taken over the nation with more web users than ever logging on to the net for the latest news.

According to the latest web trends, UK sports sites with Euro 2004 content have increased in popularity as the tournament has progressed.

The latest research from Nielsen//NetRatings shows that more than 900,000 surfers logged on to BBC Sport last week, while up to 200,000 people visited Yahoo Sports and UEFA Euro 2004.

On the day of England’s opening game against France, traffic to Euro 2004 sites was lighter than the days following the game. But on the day of England’s second game against Switzerland, news.bbc.co.uk/sports attracted a visitor high.

Gabrielle Prior, European data analyst, said: “At the beginning of this tournament Nielsen//NetRatings predicted that an unprecedented 25 million Europeans would log on to view Euro 2004 related content in June and July, and so far, it would appear that we are well on the way to achieving that number.”

Meanwhile, the official Big Brother website entered the top 20 most visited sites for the first time ever last week, according to internet measurement firm Hitwise.

The Big Brother bust-up last Thursday helped the website became the 17th most visited website in the UK, despite being temporarily forced offline by news-hungry fans.

Fans website Digital Spy also reported its busiest ever day in its five-year history last Thursday, recording 1.8 million page impressions across the day, almost three times its normal daily average.

If you are not a BB fan, then why do you appear to watch so much of it and bother to post on fansites?
