Default \"The real Big Brother\" - Is it time to reclaim our privacy?

With News Paper reports like this one below appearing in the international press is it time we took a stand and reclaim our privacy from the nanny state?

Quote:
Absolute Control of the British Population
The citizens are being threatened with the old days of the “Iron Lady”, who then insisted on the total control of the British population.

According to Daily Mail, plans for massive “tapping” of the whole population of the United Kingdom, are destined to be “a step too far for the British way of life”.

The Cabinet proposed the recording of every phone call, monitoring all emails, every SMS message, internet search and online purchase in a fight against terrorism and other criminal acts.

Information Commissioner Richard Thomas said that the traditional freedom of the people is under serious threat from state surveillance.

“Whatever the benefits, would such a scheme amount to excessive surveillance? Would this be a step too far for the British way of life?” asked Thomas.

The surveillance scheme would enable the police or MI5 access to the exact time a telephone call was made, the exact number that was dialled, the length of the conversation, and in the case of mobile phones, the location of the device with an accuracy of 100 meters.

There are also the details of when an email was sent, who the sender and receiver is.
Richard Thomas’ warnings prompted fighters for privacy, that claim that such power by Big Brother will enable total control over the citizens and their personal data.

It is obvious that Great Britain is returning to the times of Margaret Thatcher.

Also, there is a fear of sharing data with foreign governments, like when the United States requests the data of every airplane passenger, that can easily be handed to somebody that can use the information to their advantage.

If you haven't seen it I recommend watching V for Vendetta, its my favorite film of all time, Its based around conservatives running the country, and the whole country has a curfew at night and if you don't stick to it the finger men rape the women and attack the men and vans in the street record your conversations in your house via satellite. Basically long story cut short the whole nation stands up against the government. And its a really inspirational film.
But its true, the government think they are our parents and they wanna keep an eye on us all. I understand they want us to be safer but I don't want to have to watch my step on everything I do, when I walk past a policeman i was get this feeling someone is watching me and that I feel like I've done something wrong and that they are going to stop me, that would be the feeling 24/7. We are not babies and we know what we are doing, there are other ways to tackle crime than to monitor everything everyone does.

I doubt they'd actually implement this. There'd be too much outrage.

Brah **** in England is out of control. You got cameras everywhere, police are allowed to search you for no reason, now they are going to put metal dectors up on the streets.

**** like that doesn't fly here, we have constitutional rights that limit the governments imposition into our lives. We are afforded unremovable rights to protect us against unreasonable search and seziure along with many other rights.

If the British populations wants to protect itself from the government it needs to act fast. England is quickly becoming a Police state.

The mail makes out this is a new thing.

It's perfectly possible for the government to monitor your calls, texts and emails as it is and they have used the technology many times to find criminals/ terrorists etc...

I wasn't talking about the cost to our rights, I was just saying that- technically, all this information is already recorded for a limited amount of time.

Texts for example are kept by phone companies, even after they are sent- which police can access if they wanted to badly enough. There is also means of tracking emails and phone calls...

Ah, I think I see how you interpreted it now. I wasn't making the case that it's good because they've caught lots of criminals and terrorists by doing it- I was just giving that as an example of a time they would use it and have in the past- to show that this isn't anything new, like the daily mail and it's shock tactics news stories would have you believe.

The proposals to eves drop on e-mails has been going on for some years now....The subject pops up every so often I think so Government can get a taste of public reaction before trying to implement some or all of it's proposals..

Security and terrorist tracking is their excuse for doing it....

My understanding is that e-mails would not be kept to read but instead just a record of who e-mailed who where and when. the content I understand would not be retained.

However give governments an inch and you soon have abuse of people privacy and rights.......

A difficult subject to evaluate. However i feel in the long run be afraid be very afraid.....
