Well Basically I moved down to Cornwall a few months ago so I could start at this specialist art college in Plymouth,Plymouth College of Art & Design. (1 of 4 Specilist Art Collegas.) And its been a couple of days since I started there and I'm just really not enjoying it as much as I would like to, and there are a lot of things that are just annoying me and what I hate about it.
Its a class of 58, which I'm normally use to a class of 10 or 12, and I'm with that class of 58 throughout the whole day, Im doing a BTEC ND Art & Design course btw. I know college is way different from what I'm use to with being at public school for a long time and I was prepared for it and for it to be different and everything. But what's annoying me is that in the class of 58 is that over half of them don't want to be there, they really don't care and not prepared to do the work, they mess about, they sit there doing nothing and I'm not being cocky (as it really isn't like me to be) but half of them aren't even decent enough at Art. BTEC is such a hard thing to normally get into at most schools and definitely at my previous school, which I also got accepted into. When I got in it gave me such a confidence boost and now to know that this many people got in and when there are doing the things what they are really put me down and just annoyed me.
The way they ran and did BTEC Art & Design at my previous school is very organized, and just really professional I suppose and here there really unorganized, they don't explain stuff very well and there's less individual attention which is what's needed. I just preferred it so much better how they ran it at my previous school. It's just that if I had stayed I felt that I would gotten the most out of it, and would of given me what I wanted, and I would of ended up with a impressive portfolio, and would of got me a great chance for a good carear and the College I feel won't get me far and won't get me to where I wan't to be in 2 years time and won't push me further. I just feel they can't do enough for me. I am a good art student, I have got high grades for a long time in art and I feel that the college will just ruin that.
The thing is I also moved because I really wasn't enjoying my other school (Millfield), like a had a bit of a hard time there, and just kinda hated my expieriance there but the School itself was amazing with the facilities and everything just really no school like it,. I moved just so I could have a new start and kind of just start again, And I just feel like i Made a BIG mistake and should of just stayed there for another 2 years just to do the course, and just stay there partly because I know the school would of given me a fantastic opportunities and prospects for future carers, high grades and also with its very high reputation, I just feel like a big snob too and that I should of expected this? ARgh, help, advice?

it's not the colllege that push you, it is you. Keep focused and do your work and you'll get your good grades dude. Just keep thinking about what you want from life and keep that as your motivation. It's hard, especially in Devon (I live in Totnes, near Plymouth) and it is testing but you'll get through.


Also from a fellow artist (yes people i do art as well as write, lol)
sometimes more people is better because if you can find something with your work which makes you stand out against so many people and it's good, then you beat the competition, which when you try make it in real world, becomes fierce, any art field is the same, be it writing, theatre, art, music, dance.


Keep your chin up and brush/pen down.

i think you should stick with this clas sof 58.. but try REALLY Hard
and then come like, 1st out of 58
i know it must be annoying, but seeing as you made a decision the best thing is to make the most of it

I think you should complain to one of the top people at the college and demand that something is sorted out with the class size. That's not on at all with that many people in your class. Is there like a student union or something that you could go to which would help you sort it out?

This is what I'd do

Firstly and foremostly, I'd work really really hard, either way, you're going to get out what you put in. Put in hard work and improve.

Secondly, maybe talk to a teacher about it perhaps, be honest and ask them how you will be able to get the best out of a career in art.

Thirdly, perhaps say to your parents its incredibly better back at you're old school. Surely they want you to get the best out of your education.

When I think up some more advice, I'll come back to you.

stick at it dont give up on something you love
chances are those they are mucking around etc will quit before long anyway
keep your head down do your work and pass with flying colours
