When a takeaway worker died the shop's owner carried on cooking kebabs next to his corpse.
Jaswinder Singh, 45, prepared the food in his stinking, rat infested shop as flies buzzed around the body of employee Makhan Singh, slumped feet away on a sofa, a court heard yesterday. Outraged district judge Martin Brown banned the takeaway boss from ever working with food again. He told him: "The facts in this case are extraordinarily serious. They are about as grave as one might get." Police had been called to investigate the sudden death at the Pappu Sweet Centre and Catering - a combined takeaway and sweet shop - on August 25. Makhan, 36, whose death was ruled not suspicious by a coroner, had been left on a sofa. The horrified police officer immediately closed the premises. Environmental health officials found rat droppings, a dead rat under a pan and rancid food. Staff had also been smoking and spitting on the floor. At Wolverhampton magistrates court Judge Brown told Singh: "The findings included dead vermin, rotting food, quite disgusting and horrendous conditions and the rather unpleasant findings of the PC. You are not a fit person to be preparing food." In 2001, Singh was fined £2,000 for flouting hygiene rules . Yesterday he admitted 12 food hygiene charges but his pleas for another chance were ignored. He was banned and ordered to pay £3,861. Despite the ban, customers continued to buy food at the takeaway in the city's Park Village yesterday. The facts in this case are extraordinarily serious .. about as grave as one might get.
