X Factor Laura White deserved to go, says John Barrowman

West End star John Barrowman says he’s not surprised Laura White was voted off Saturday’s X Factor because it’s impossible to “understand a word she’s saying”.

John, who was a judge on How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria in 2006 and Any Dream Will Do last year, exclusively told Mirror.co.uk: “A lot of people might not like this but I wasn’t surprised at the vote.

“She’s got a fantastic voice but no one ever mentioned her problem with diction, you can’t understand a word she’s saying.”

The singer, whose Gary Barlow-penned single What About Us is out November 17, also revealed he was “shocked” that Austin Drage was voted off and thinks boyband JLS and 16-year-old Eoghan Quigg “might go the distance”.

However, he has an interesting theory as to why Diana Vickers has apparently lost her voice and knows her mentor Cheryl Cole won’t like it too much.

He confessed: “This is gonna sound really very critical - Simon you’re not gonna like me and Cheryl sorry for saying this, but I think the reason Diana’s off with her voice being knackered is because she doesn’t sing correctly.

“She forces everything from her throat and it’s an affected sound to her voice. I don’t think she’ll last, but I think she’s got a unique voice and unique talent.”

Now, although I can see what John Barrowman is saying in the article above and I agree she has one hell of a voice, she still is outstanding as a singer of blues and jazz type music. I do believe with the right vocal coaching the problems of her diction can be sorted. What she has done is to over stylized the from of singing that suits her voice to the point that the voice is just an instrument to add to the music and she has lost the importance of the words.

Interestingly the same criticism that was piled on Austin the week before and saw him voted off the show.

If she can get rid of this problem and let the weight of the words add to the importance of the music, this girl is world class.
