JITTERY Britney Spears snubbed The X Factor’s final five contestants over fears they are toxic.

The comeback queen was put in quarantine before her TV appearance so she didn’t catch any bugs from the wannabes.

And she refused to meet any of the finalists or fans over fears she would catch laryngitis and throw her £100million comeback into turmoil.

But that wasn’t BRITNEY’S only worry last night. The DAILY STAR SUNDAY can also reveal that the sexy star is worried about the effect of a warts-and-all documentary being screened in the US tonight and in the UK tomorrow.

Britney, 26, is gambling on the programme provoking sympathy for her after her meltdown. But she is terrified it could see fans turn their backs on her for good.

Britney is also suffering after being separated from sons Jayden and Preston while visiting Europe.

A source close to the star said: “This is a make-or-break period for Britney, which could land her £100million or see her back on the scrapheap.”

Britney is on a whistlestop tour of Europe before heading home to promote her new album Circus.

And she thrilled X FACTOR viewers with a raunchy performance of her new hit Womanizer last night in what was her first UK appearance in five years.

But she left it until the last minute to arrive for the show because of health fears.

Contestants DIANA VICKERS, 17, and her rival ALEXANDRA BURKE, 20, almost pulled out of the show because of serious throat infections.

CHERYL COLE, 25, and SIMON COWELL, 48, have also been battling severe flu.

The final decision to put Britney in lockdown came after it was revealed Leona Lewis has also been sick since she performed on the show two weeks ago.

The source said: “Britney was so scared of getting ill she decided to fly in from Paris to perform and fly straight out again.

“She was worried about the cold weather but when staff found out about Leona and the contestants’ illnesses, that was the last straw.

“She has a lot of money riding on this latest comeback and she could not risk getting ill as well.”

But the star will be seen pleading “for my life back” in the Sky1 documentary Britney: For The Record.

She claims she feels like a “prisoner” because of the public glare.

And she moans: “Even when you go to jail, you know there’s a time when you’re gonna get out.

“But in this situation, it’s never-ending. It’s like Groundhog Day every day.”

Britney: For The Record is on tomorrow at 9pm on Sky1 and Sky1 HD.

Meanwhile RUTH LORENZO became the eighth contestant to be booted off the last night.

The sexy Spanish singer bowed out gracefully after receiving the least amount of public votes.

She said: “I fought with all my heart, with everything I had. And this doesn’t end here. This is the beginning of my dream."
