I agree it is a strong word but it is up to the user to decide whether it is appropriate for them to use it or not. I do think people should really consider the words they use before using the word hate so freely but it is a feeling that can not be policed

My main concern is that fm's use it about people they don't even know.

It shouldn't be used so much as it is a strong word. I prefer strongly dislike, but sometimes if I'm lazy(which is a reall bad reason) I'll just type hate instead.

I agree it is used in that way and personally I think there are better words people could use to describe their feelings towards the housemates than the word hate. Especially, like you say, about people they don't really know or have no really connection with other than in a voyeuristic way.

Hate is a word to me that is do with intense feelings and powerful emotions of dislike of someone. In fact in all my life I can't think of anyone I have actually hated, disliked strongly yes, but not hated.

Like many words today, especially swear words, the word hate has become come place and lost it's real meaning and impact. It is thrown about and said so much the power of it original meaning has become lost and it has just become a substitute for words like dislke which is emotionally far less powerful in it meaning.

Personally I feel the word shouldn't be used in the way it is used on TiBB, however trends in language change all the time and it hard to stop them even if they are detrimental the langauge as a whole once they have become ingrained in the media and within youth culture.

Hate is a stronger word than dislike so it puts the point across better. This doesn't make it right though.

I use it but it's not too big a deal I think. Whatever.

There is worse words than that
Its people who agree with banning words like hate that I do hate because its only people voicing their opinion.

Of course hate should not be banned. Lets not forget, for those of us that are still sane, that most people 'hate' housemates in the way you might 'hate' your toaster that sparks up, or how you might 'hate' the weather. Nobody wants any ... disharmony ... but still.

Who said the word should be banned as such. I thought the thread was about if it is the right word to use about housemates and people you don't even know.

Merely a matter of terminology. I was not suggesting the word 'Hate' should be banned. Although in fairness, if bloody is censored ...

Never have understood why that one is censored some of the others aren't. I ran a check on the swear word filter ages ago and loads slipped through the net.

On the use of the hate, your examples of it's use show how the meaning of the word has been lost over the years.

True point. I think it was innevitable and natural that it happened. By the same token, how many times a day do we say 'love' when we could say 'like'? It hardly matters though. I think people will know when it is being used in a serious context in life.
