Default Barack Hussein Obama will be a huge disappointment - Discuss

People keep building him up, and expecting so much from him, that when reality bites, so many people will be disappointed that he is not able to live up to their over inflated expectations. Even though it will not really be his fault, I fear the new president will be seen by many as a huge dissapointment.

Am I being overly pessimistic?

My point is that so many people are imagining great things will happen, that when they possibly don't, it will seem like a big let down, even if he has not put a foot wrong.

Basically there is a danger in putting people on high pedestals

Totally agree, people are expecting great instant change well they aren't going to get it. People are going to have to wait years to see any real change so people are going to be disspointed
Its a hard job to come into especially with all the expectations but I think Obama will do a great job

I definitely think people are expecting far too much far too soon; yes, he's an exciting change, but we can't expect anything dramatic overnight. And I'm sure the vast majority of Americans aren't so naive to expect that. At the same time though, I think a "huge disappointment" is going a step too far as well - we can't be sure yet, and there's time to see how things pan out. Definitely better than Bush, but I doubt we'll see such massive changes... he shares some similar policy views, e.g. he praised Israel in 2005 so it looks like the US/Israel current predicament won't change in a hurry.

Furthermore, selecting Hilary Clinton and Rahm Emanuel as potential Secretary of State and enforcers shows he's holding onto old traditions as well. Although I don't care from a direct point of view, what happens does affect everyone... so you don't need a massive degree of interest to follow what's going on. It's just comforting to know he'll be in the White House as opposed to the alternative. After Bush and the last horrendous few years, anyone would have been a welcome change, but the fact that Obama's actually exciting caused hysteria. He's new, but at the very least has provided hope.

I find it scary tbh honest. I don't like him much and i think he's making the wrong choices. Even tho I don't get politics at all, I know what he's doing will end up as a huge mistake in about 5 + years.

I think he'll correct some of the wrongs George Bush caused in his Presidencies, but whether or not he'll make any real progress of his own is debatable, because a lot of people within his party resent him for "queue jumping" (i.e. he was an up and coming guy, but certainly not first in line for the Presidency, which has annoyed a lot of long standing members of the party I think.)

If people get caught up in the hype then he'll be a huge disappointment to them personally.

However, like Ash says, most people are aware that change takes time.

I think most of the hype is because it's a historical moment, especially for non-white citizens. There's a sense of equality which for some was not there before.

I think it's a good thing that he is president, and I think he will make positive changes. But, I know it won't happen overnight.

Exactly. He will be another Blair......very popular at the beginning due to people dreamland expectations......and then he will fail to meet any where near expectations and the public as per usual will turn ugly on him.....Just a matter of time that's all.......

Mean while because Obama is a Democrat Iran will be allowed to drag out phoney negotiations right up to the point Iran drops a nuclear device on Israel.....

In my opinion I do not think anyone can form such opinions on Obama, not at such an early stage of his presidency.
I agree that he has been built up as some super-human president that will fix everyone in the worlds problems in a matter of hours in the office, anyone with a brain will not be drawn into false hopes and expectations. As many people have said in this thread.. the change Obama has been speaking of will take time, people need to realise that with the current economic crises, the wars in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan.. they will not fix over night, they need persistence, time and a good president to even begin to correct the errors 8 years of idiocy that has been bestowed onto America. Give Obama the time which is needed, I believe he is the making of a fantastic president... at least we know his four years in office will be a hundred times better than the eight years every American citizen has had to suffer through.

Blair was a rip-off of Clinton, and even ripped off his speeches.

Leave your Right wing propaganda at the door. Thanks.
