JADE: GOOD NEWS AT LAST

TRAGIC Jade Goody got a reason to smile again yesterday as husband Jack Tweed escaped prison – for now.

He was found guilty of a drunken assault on a cabbie. Tweed was warned that he is facing jail, but he will not be sentenced for another three weeks, giving the newlyweds precious time together.

If Jack had been jailed on the spot, dying Jade feared she would never see her husband again. Tweed wept in the dock as his lawyer told the court that doctors have given his bride less than four weeks to live.

But Jade herself showed her joy that her husband can remain at her side by giving a thumbs-up as she moved hospitals on a stretcher.

She left the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in south-west London following a successful 90-minute operation to ease the pain of her cancer.

With her head covered in a scarf, and clutching a breathing apparatus, Jade, 27, gave a brave half-smile as she returned to the nearby Royal Marsden Hospital.

Her spokesman Max Clifford said the surgery to remove a blockage from her bowel went well. He said: “This operation will improve the quality of Jade’s life in the near future.”

Max claimed the mum-of-two would return home as soon as she felt strong enough. Her planned interview with Piers Morgan for his ITV1 show – due tomorrow – has been delayed.

She now hopes to go in front of the cameras as soon as she returns to her £700,000 barn conversion in Upshire, Essex.

But Jade could die knowing her hubby is about to be banged up in prison again.

Tweed, 21 – who had denied the offence – broke down and sobbed as he faced the prospect of a jail term after being convicted by magistrates at Epping, Essex.

He is currently out of prison on licence with a tag after a previous assault conviction.

His lawyer Tania Panagiotopoulou told the court Tweed’s marriage had changed his lifestyle.

“He tries to care for his wife as best he can under the conditions of his tag and is unable to work,” she said.

“His partying lifestyle is well and truly over. He is no longer that man.”

But magistrate Karin Cox rejected pleas for sentencing to be deferred for six months. She ruled that Tweed will not be given special treatment and will be sentenced on March 26.

Tweed scowled at reporters as he left the court, thumping the window of his mother’s Mini because it was locked.

The victim of his assault, cabbie Stephen Wilkins, 54, said: “Her in a hospital bed and her new husband in the dock is not a great situation, but he deserves what he gets.”
