Default £3 hike for TV licence fees

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/21/20090309...s-6323e80.html

The cost of a colour television licence is to rise by £3 to £142.50 from April 1, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has said. Skip related content
Black and white only licences will also go up by £1 from £47 to £48, it was confirmed.

The increase is being brought into effect by an order laid in the House of Commons.

It follows the six-year BBC funding settlement which began in April 2007.

The licence fee increase is set at 3% for the first two years of the settlement and 2% in years three, four and five. This year is year three.

The six-year settlement is helping the BBC cope with a period of rapid change.

It will help support the digital switchover in 2012, including funding and delivery of a help scheme to vulnerable people.

The corporation is also in the process of moving significant production to the north west of England, which should bring an estimated £1.5 billion and 15,500 jobs to the area.

I don't think that there should be no TV license because it could lead to a collapse in commercial TV ... but I do think that if you get a low income then you shouldn't have to pay it

£2/week isn't a lot if you earn a lot anyway but for some families I bet that £2 can sometimes be pretty vital

i currently pay £11 a month while it may not sound much it is to me so i think that would be a good idea even a part pay scheme where you only pay a fraction if on low income

Maybe they should come up with some system where the more money you earn then the more money you pay towards the license, that would balance it out so they don't really make a loss. I'd definitely pay an extra £1 or 2 a month if it meant other people could easily make ends meet

Yeah, if you've got the money then its not really a problem tbh but if you're on a low income and struggle for basics then it does get a bit of a problem ...

When I move out I am just not going to buy any TV's, I will just watch TV on my laptop. One of my TV's is a waste anyway as it is never on. The only one that is used is in my mums room.

I'm sure you still need a TV license if you are streaming live TV from the internet.
