A FORMER X Factor contestant died from cancer at the age of 19 — after medics missed several chances to save him, an inquest heard.
Chris Chaffey’s symptoms were put down to panic attacks, and he was allegedly advised to “grow up and stop worrying”.
His cancer was discoverd only two days before he died.
He had tumours in his skull and neck — and one weighing more than 4lb in his chest.
Charity worker Chris, from Coniston, East Yorks, appeared in the first round of the ITV talent show in 2006.
The following year he started to struggle with chest pains, breathlessness, headaches, nausea and dizziness, the Hull inquest was told.
He visited his GP half a dozen times in the 15 months leading to his death but blood tests were not properly followed up, it was claimed.
Chris was rushed to hospital in July 2007 with vomiting and chest pains but was referred back to his GP.
He was finally admitted last September — after an out-of-hours doctor found a lump.
Consultant haematologist Dr Sahra Ali was then called in.
He said: “It’s a very sad case which was treatable and potentially curable if it had presented at an earlier stage.”
The inquest was adjourned until Monday.
