can't nobody hold us down
|
I saw this article [Article Link] on Yahoo! News earlier and it reminded me of this debate I saw on 'The Big Question' show last week. They were debating 'is the screen generation missing out on real life?' - which is basically the younger generation and our obsession social networking sites. Experts and teachers on the panel were arguing that spending our time on these websites takes away our social skills, encourages us to create 'fake personas' and can corrupt our English skills due to the huge amount of 'internet lingo' we use online. Then again, there were people saying that these sites can help us gain confidence and meet new people, which a lonely person who would visit this website for couldn't do in real life.
So what are your views on social networking websites and this generation? Is it heathy to be obsessed with Facebook or any others? Should teenagers/young adults be spending so much of their time on them and missing out on real life? |

But Facebook now lets you Not go Public
so only your family can see your page. So it is a Revolution. It is a Function Connection Tool. |

Some people do get addicted to these things and make their lives online. iv known people when i was at school who would go home and the spend the entire evening on the computer talking over the net just to repeat the proccess the next day.
I use the net alot but i also make sure i get out and about. |

I only use Facebook for friends, and rarely for people on TiBB for example. I wouldn't just add randomers though like some people.
I have a great life though, so I've nothing to worry about. (Edit: Also, I've got a good grasp of English Language so don't need to worry about 'lingo' coming through outside of the internet, and I have more of a life outside the internet than online... I don't quite understand how people can't?). |

I use it a lot, but I wouldn't say I have no life.
You could say that if, say, I had about 3039293 facebook (or myspace, bebo, whatever) 'friends' and I didn't actually know any of them. But I know pretty much all of mine and the ones I haven't met are from TiBB |

Only joking!! Okay, I go on Facvebook all the time, but thats when im home! And thats why im on it on school nights the most because its the days that im home, doesnt mean people have no life, because then you would be offending 80 million people around the world! Stupid article!! Edit- Ive reached about 380 friends now!!Woo And I actually know all of them except 1 (a friend of a friend) |

The Better way is not be Public and Only your Cirlce are on it. You can now click not to be viewed by public. That then blocks Pervs out and the Like. |

Bitch is BACK!
|
I heard this being talked about on the radio a wee bit ago.
I think that people will actually forget how to socialise in REAL LIFE due to networking sites, forums, msn etc. Its all getting out of control But I love it |

See I never see this problem, Facebook makes it so I have more of a social life. If I had no facebook or MSN I would not go out as often as I do. That is my main source of communication. I go on the computer instead of TV, so I am not watching a screen more than anyone else.
Thanks to social networking sites, I have more of a life. In fact I even met friends through the site! |

Facebook is really useful for organising social lives like events and things like that. Its also really quick and easy to get in touch with people. Everyone has one and almost everyone is on very often so its easy to contact someone.
If you don't want a life then fair enough .... |

I agree, the younger people are very bad socially these days. I mean the people about 18 and under. And you can tell just by watching tehm on the streets, they have a hard time interacting with humans. Most of them are burried on their Ipod, while out and about, and when they are home, they bury themselves on social networsks.
As for facebook, I have one that's me with my real name and everything, and its for friends and family. I have one however, which is for my hobbies, online friends and such. It works great, I would recomment doing that for everyone. |

I see the old people are bitching, and pounding on the walls with their canes, telling us to, "keep the noise down!"
