Yesterday while trying to make a in Windows Movie maker, my desktop started crashing when I have been trying to add to the timeline avi files. Sometimes it happens when I try and do a fade in or fade out on a movie file. It has even happened when I did publish movie or even import movie files.
At first I feared it was a corrupted video files in my camera, but the video files worked fine on my laptop with no problem, which was where the video was made. I then found it would happen with files that a few months earlier, in January I successfully made a movie with on the desktop. These crashes have even given me the Blue screen of death twice, but most of the time the whole pc freezes and I have to do a hard restart. I could not seem to find a free download of Windows Movie Maker 6, integral to Vista on the Microsoft website. I assume I need to reinstall Movie Maker. As I bought my PC at PC world I thought the Tech Guys could sort it, but when I rang I was told this is not in their domain as it involves Microsoft software. It has been suggested I update the graphics card driver, which I will try although that to me is quite scary as it goes outside my normal expertise.. In case I loose the whole desktop, I better let you know of the problem. It was nice knowing you ![]() Edit Rename the thread as the procedure turned out to be pointless |

Good luck, but it'll be fine. Your computer is constantly doing little internal updates of it's own anyway without you knowing, so this is just another slightly larger scaled one.

Since my system told me my driver is up to date and did not update it, I have renamed the thread to the main problem.
Now we know that updating the graphics card did not work

Sounds like the avi codec (software that decompresses video and audio) is crashing WMM.
Use a program like avicodec to find out which codecs (video and audio) are used by the avi and re-install the codecs on your computer. Updating the graphics card drivers might help too - you can find out which card you have in Device Manager. |

I would avoid codec packs generally as they can cause problems and try and install in the individual codecs you need. |

You do not have to pay for alternative software. Perhaps you could "accidentally" download a torrent for Sony Vegas 8?
