To stop sweat leaking everywhere and BO apparently attracts the opposite sex so it stores it ...

Yeah, like Tom said - it catches pheromones which make us more attractive. It's just evolutionary in that respect.

I'm going to be really honest here ..... I'd have thought this was very basic knowledge and am pretty shocked that there are quite a few on here that genuinely have no idea of the whats/whys of such basic things.

Now...before you all go jumping down my throat...that's not necessarily slagging any of you off......it goes back to what I said many months ago about the standards of what gets taught these days possibly.
