Default Are soap operas TOO violent?

OK, everyone (well most people) know that soap operas aren't real but my question to you is are they too violent for the time of the evening in which they air? They are all on before the watershed so kids are highly likely to be watching, even if it is on in the background. Yes, we all watch soap operas because we can relate to some of the characters, and storylines and at the end of the day people want to see drama and conflict - but is there TOO much of it being shown? I meant to post this debate a few weeks back but I forgot about it until now. The reason I ask is a few weeks back in EastEnders, I saw Phil Mitchell throw a bottle across the kitchen in the Vic and one which really did make me think was when Phil caught Billy stealing money for Nick Cotton and he gave him such a thump and it looked rather sore and violent. Is this sending the wrong message out to the public and encouraging violence as a resolving method towards conflict and disagreement? I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Please bring your thoughts to this topic.

I think people are way too oversensitive these days. The problem is when violence happens in the real world some people are more willing to blame it on the TV or the games console ETC rather then face up to their mistakes.

I think the violence is contained to show just enough to make an impact. I dont think its too violent, and if kids do watch then surely it opens their eyes to the world in which they live, not a perfect rainbow filled wonderland. Kids still have their imagination to take them away to places as such but can still open their eyes to what could be happening to others and even if its a case of 'its happening at home' can help understand its not just them who are going through it. It opens topics to them as well which they can discuss if they need to know more. Education about what happens in the 'real' world is just as important as classroom lessons

They are not too violent and if they were, the British Broadcasting Corporation would be in a lot of trouble. More than likely have to offer an apology to the viewers and pay a hefty fine. At least thats the way things are supposed to be done logically. I'm assuming we are focusing on Eastenders. Since that seems to be taking most of the flack when it comes to complaints regarding over the top behavior which is rather ridiculous.

They tend to put out warnings that a serious episode is coming up; and normally they're on later than usual; so it's not as if the warnings aren't put in place. I don't think soaps have ever been too violent, they can sometimes be quite shocking, but never violent in the way that the Saw films are, for example.
