Default Horror films - The worst genre of film?

Do you think Horror is the worst film genre? Over the years most horror films have become lampooned critically and often only attract big figures in their first week before trailing off. So far this year there's only been one horror film that has been critically successful and that's Drag me to Hell (Brilliant film, a great mix of thrilling and funny).

My thoughts are that generally Hollywood horror films suck. These days they depend too much on endless remakes and Saw sequels, There's no creativity.

Apart from recent Hollywood efforts (the exception being DMTH) I do like Horror. I like UK and foreign Horrors like 28 days later, REC, Tale of two sisters, The orphanage. I think Hollywood just need to take soem risks and perhaps release fooreign films on wide release without ripping out their souls and remaking them instead.

What's your view on the horror genre? What's your favourite horror films?

What? Scream 4? New News to me..... I love the scream films.... I cant wait for Halloween 2 and Island of the dead.
Horror films are much better then soppy cruddy romance films. I must admit I do enjoy the horror comedy, to be honest drag me To hell did make me jump a few times... and I rarely get jumpy in a film.
neve cambell not in scream? it like, I dont know, haveing ice cream with any sauce on top of it!

Easily the worst genre. First of all - I scare easily. Second, **** acting. Third, most of them are over-done, like Saw / Final Destination movies. They're irrelevant IMO - what's the point in proactively trying to scare yourself? I really don't understand the appeal.

The thing I find is that especially with Hollywood films is that they aren't scary. The problem is that too much CGI and unoriginal scare tactics are too often used. It's hard to be scared of polygons.

I think Hollywood need to take inspiriation (But not just remake everything) from things like European film industries, some of the best horror films I've seen have been spanish ones in particular.

The ultimate problem with horror is that it's completely stagnant.

I don't think you can really state DMTH as an exception seeing as equally as many people panned it and said it was awful as people who loved it.

I only like Horror films with something original in them (the Scream franchise, Saw 1-3, The Ring, The Grudge) or films based on true stories.

I think The Ring is that last truly great horror film we had. Maybe Saw.

There's a few classics in Psycho, The Shining etc. but it's a saturated market.

I agree about the CGI stuff, if you look at The Blair Witchfor example. That was done on one of the smallest budgets but because of the fear of the unknown people loved it. (Plus the fact there was a rumour about it being based on a true story just before it was released)

I have to say I love all the old types of horror movies, but people are forgetting them now because half of them are being remade when they shouldn't.

America ruins most horror films.

Look at the Japanese/original version of most horror films and they'll -actually- be terrifying. It's just a case of rooting out all the shitty remakes with big effects and finding well-produced movies with tension and atmosphere beyond fakery.

Japanese films don't translate well when remade, The Ring was the only remake that was half decent really. I do agree with Saw though, the first one was brilliant but it's brilliance has been tainted by needless torture porn sequels.

Like Ice said the best horror films are low budget affairs and older films. If you want true modern horror films then Hollywood ain't the place to go. They were gonna REMAKE the Exorcist for crying out loud.

There are some great ones that get overlooked that aren't too old but for the life of me I can't think of any right now, i'll have a look at my DVD collection later and then post some.

I love horror movies. Possibly my favourite genre. I love the way that characters are (usually) picked off one by one, you have no idea who'll survive when you first watch it. I love slasher movies, they're the best!

I love horror films. There are some great ones from the 80's such as "The Thing". There are also some great "horror" scenes in some B-Movies such as "Zombie flesh eaters", however, they are made on such a low budget that the acting/sets/costumes are sometimes highly laughable.
