Default What\'s Media Studies Like?

So I'm going to college in September to study Media Studies, and was kinda wondering what it's like? I know you're probs thinking why I applied if I dunno what it was like but the blurb bit on the website sounded interesting but I've never actually known anyone that's done it.

Anyone?

I'm doing it at GCSE, the people in top English get to do it ...

We like analyze adverts, articles in magazines, magazine covers, all sorts!

Then we have a major project, where we have to make a short film :3 Xx

As an A level I've heard it's sh*t. If you're gonna do it, do it as a BTEC. It's more hands on you learn a lot more about the industry and it's great. But then I can only talk about the Film and TV side of things, there's E-media which is stuff like web design, animation and graphics too.

If you've got interest in it, do it as a BTEC but if you wanna do A levels I probably wouldn't reccomend it. I'd whole heartedly recommend BTEC though.

I did that in GCSE too, as a college course though it's very different.

I did it at both GCSE and A Level and can honestly say it was sh*t. Both courses were near enough identical as well and by the time I finished the end of the A Level course I felt like I actually hadn't learned anything over the 2 years and learned it all at GCSE

Definitely wouldn't recommend it especially with the stigma attached to it

I love it! But people always moan when we do it - I'm like whatt? Don't moan! It's better than essays!

Also, my friend did it for 4 years, GCSE and A-level, and she's just taking her final exams for it, and she loves it! She's gutted it's her last few weeks of it!

and people say it's for non - academic people, which isn't true! She got 4 A*'s and 5 A's at GCSE, and took Media after that! If you're interested in media and stuff, it's right up your street!

Sociology is probably more difficult, it involves politics and a bit of history as well as theology.

Very easy and useless... I think for the 2 weeks I did it I learnt about the importance of the different positions of fruit on an advert.

I agree with Dean if you do it, do it as a BTEC, same goes for Performing arts or Acting... or Dancing. Never do them as A Levels.

But if you are interested in making adverts, shows etc, it's good to know where and where not to put stuff in adverts!

I'm finishing my ND1 course in it in two weeks (I have done FD too) so I have one year left

My course has been very good, in March we went away for a week to do an on location drama, I think it depends on who is teaching you, as in my FD year, it was kinda meh, but this year a new tutor came in and the course has become a lot more exciting, we have our own radio station too, and we will be getting more stuff next year

All in all I've enjoyed it, although the paper work is a annoyance

I'm coming to the end of my first year in college doing it, and I'm not bothering going onto the second year of [haven't got the grades to anyway, but even if I did I wouldn't]. So yeah, pretty much what everyone else said. It isn't very good.

Damn, i already picked it for college for September, I picked originally but may change:

Film Studies
Media studies
Sociology
Photography

Looking at the 4 i chose, i kind of dont want to do all 4 of them, i think i might change.

it is very very easy and therefore probably pointless.
i doubt you'll actually learn anything other than the names for loads of different shots and how to use programmes you'll neevr have to use again lol

What stigma?

At our college the media students are the most normal

Art - Stoners
Photography - Strong silent types
Performing arts - Overly camp

although I have been told I'm more suited to being a performing arts student
