Default Does sexuality influence music tastes?

I've been thinking of this for a while (I'm quite simple) and I wondered about everyone's thoughts on whether your sexuality influenced your music tastes. For example, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, Madonna etc. are all seen as gay icons and most gay people love them and they have a MASSIVE gay fan base, and yet I've still to meet a gay person who loves Metallica, AC/DC, Iron Maiden etc.

Do you think sexuality influences your taste in music?

I think undoubtedly, yes. Otherwise things would be far too coincidental. Being gay means a certain kind of lifestyle for many too, and more often than not, flamboyant pop music fits in with that.

I'm bisexual and listen to rock music.

But at the question, I think it's more music taste influences sexuality.

haha I think it's proper interesting to think about, I actually do know Bi people who's music tastes are fairly balanced, but then all the people I know who are gay LOVE pop music and despise other genres.

Kind of, I think a lot of it is to do with social psychology tbh

Every stereotype, even outside of sexuality, has a stereotypical music taste so I think its a lot to do with who you interact with rather than who you are

I don't think it has anything to do with music tastes,I think it has everything to do with admitting music tastes, lol! Like I met a few TT straight guy fans in the queue and they were like 'Yeah my wife dragged me along but I suppose they are kinda great' lol.

What Tom said. Also, I think bisexuals dont really factor into it. Bi's tend to be harder to put a cliche or stereotype on. Anyone could be a bi and they can listen to pretty much anything. I think it is just specificaly gay males who always seem to 'womanise' themselves into liking pop music and whatnot. Thats not to say straight males like pop too. It's just the majority are gay.

I think it does. I dunno why but maybe I am being sterotypical!

But most gay guys I know like Britney, GaGa, Girls Aloud etc etc. Like really good pop music.

Most bi guys I know like indie, rock and then some pop too.

And most straight guys I know like indie, r&b, rock.

But then i dont know much

I dunno. I have straight friends who love the Scissor Sisters and Madonna :\ I think people are more likely to admit that if they are gay/bi though.

My music taste's quite eclectic...

I don't know. I think many factors including sexuality influence music taste but in any category there is diversity
I think its more to do with who you are as an individual but sexuality probably does influence people if they allow it to. If your a strong individual I don't think it influences you as much. I know quite a few gay people and their music taste differs a lot with hardly any similarities just the same as straight people really.

That's actually a very interesting question, one which I can;t really answer. I think it could be more to do with who you hand out with and trying to fit in a lot of the time and the eventually you just grow to love it. But then for me, I have ALWAYS loved pop music, since I was like 5. But at the same time I'm not limiting myself to just pop. I'm also a big fan of bands like Hole, Nirvana, The Killers, Razorlight, Muse, Paramore ext. And also like artists like Eminem and Asher Roth.

Recently though, I would more identify as an electro junkie rather than pop. Most of of my favourite artists are electropop or electronica i.e Little Boots, La Roux, Mylo, Basement Jaxx, Black Eyed Peas, Dan Black, Empire of the Sun, MGMT, Goldfrapp, Ladyhawke, ect.

I don't think sexuality influences it. More like, something influences sexuality and tastes at the same time.

I think it can. A lot of is stereotype though, in my opinion. Like how the artists Damon pointed out have to only have gay fans, where as I have straight friends who like Britney and listen to her music -awaits witty '
are you sure they're straight comments?'- but I agree, it could.

I'm gay and I like most of them artists LOL I also like a lot of indie and rock acts who may not have gay fanbase like Britney, Janet etc

To a certain point yes I suppose so. It seems to go along with sterotypes.

But a lot of emo male's are bi or gay and they listen to screamo and hard rock. I'm gay and love Britney and everybody know's and pretty much all the artists Damon mentioned.

I can assure you Britney, Madonna and co are far from my idols or icons.

I believe people are drawn into the stereotypes of music. Gays are stereotyped as liking Britney etc. So they do.
