un-seekers have been urged to stay away from the beach as thousands flocked to the Dorset coast and a major incident was declared in Bournemouth.

Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council said it was "stretched to the absolute hilt" on the second day of a UK heatwave.

Dorset Police said there were reports of gridlocked roads, fights and overnight camping.

People were urged to "act responsibly" as temperatures hit the mid-20s.

By mid-morning Bournemouth beach was busy "as far as the eye can see" and the Durdle Door car park was approaching capacity.

Traffic built up early on coast-bound roads and with people having travelled to Bournemouth from as far as Birmingham.

The council said declaring a major incident means a "multi-agency emergency response has now been activated to co-ordinate resources across the area to tackle the issues".

Council leader Vikki Slade said: "We are absolutely appalled at the scenes witnessed on our beaches, particularly at Bournemouth and Sandbanks, in the last 24 to 48 hours.

"The irresponsible behaviour and actions of so many people is just shocking and our services are stretched to the absolute hilt trying to keep everyone safe. We have had no choice now but to declare a major incident and initiate an emergency response."

The council confirmed it had issued a record 558 parking fines and said extra enforcement was now in place.

It said 33 tonnes of waste was cleaned up along the coastline on Thursday morning, in addition to eight tonnes collected between the piers on Wednesday.

The government saying you can meet at the park you can meet at the beach is what caused this, people hear that and think it’s fine and dandy they don’t pay attention to the rest

The GBP are morons, I've said it for years and I'll keep saying it BUT Boris is COMPLETELY at fault for leading a corona campaign that has constantly sent mixed messages to the point it's likely that it's intentional. Boris never wanted a lockdown, he wanted 'herd immunity' (AKA sacrificing the old and infirm) and he had to walk it back but now we're heading towards that original plan and people are disregarding everything because the leadership is **** and inconsistent.

Boris is a terrible PM and this crisis has only confirmed what the smart people have said all along.

I bet there is a statistic about seagulls attacking humans that has gone through the roof the past 2 days.

Silly buggers, I know it's hot and most of them are young, and most of them have been staying in to protect pops n granny...but wouldn't you just turn around when you saw it!!

I saw a sensible indian couple being interviewed at half six this morning on the beach...they had been there with their 2 kids since 2.40 am...alone, watching the sun come up.

I've found that the mid-evening (about 8/9pm) is the best time for a little trip to the beach at the moment. It's still sunny and warm but everyone else has ****ed off home at 6/7.

That said, the little beach we go to is never anywhere near as busy as some of the horrific pictures I've seen of the big English ones. The only beach in Scotland I've ever seen get really horrendous is Troon, because that's where Glasgow flocks on a sunny weekend. Probably because there's a direct train. I've not been to Troon Beach since I was in my late teens though, when me and my school chums went there at midnight during a thunder storm and almost got hit by lightning

But back on topic, yeah I don't understand why anyone would WANT to spend time on a busy beach. Yuck.
