It’s good when you can stick to moderate/occasional smoking. And Silk Cut’s always a good choice. It’ll see you through, whether you’re at the pub or trying to get through a 13-hour shift.

I was a Marlboro Reds kid from 15 - 24 (social only, I've only had one cigarette whilst sober in my life and it was horrible). So the most I've ever smoked is about 2 packs/week in particularly-social early Uni days. At 16 we used to get one pack of 20 between 4 or 5 of us on a Friday night, out the cigarette machine at the pub. Remember cigarette machines?? Also remember when pubs didn't give a **** that you were 16 .

My dad for all of his smoking life smoked B&H so I stole quite a few of those in my teens - but they were dog rough, that was a last resort.

No, I tell a lie.

Last resort was my mate's mum's "Club" that came in a blue pack. Actually disgusting IIRC ... they felt "thick and slimey", like smoking cooking oil?

Yuck.

Not so sure about Club myself. Sounds truly disgusting.

Same here. When I’m working long hours and I haven’t brought in CBD coffee (my limit otherwise, Costa/Caffe Nero bought or bog-standard coffee, is 2-3 cups a day, stop me feeling anxious/caffeine-overload jittery) I’ll often buy a pack of 20 and just smoke it throughout my shifts so that at least I’ve got a bit of a nicotine rush keeping me pumping along the way. I may or may not excuse myself in the pub to have one or two (and it doesn’t happen very often). Beyond that I hardly ever smoke just for the sake of smoking anymore. Even when I did 15 was my max., and usually more like 5-10 a day. I don’t think I’ve ever been truly addicted to nicotine or tobacco. It’s pretty-much always just been a habit I could take or leave.

And I only vape CBD (I like to do things in a relatively healthy way) so tobacco-vapes are off the table for me. If I want tobacco, I’d be more inclined to smoke actual cigarettes. And a pack of 20 can last me up to 2 weeks now. I don’t smoke enough anymore to be fussy about brands but when I did it tended to be Silk Cut or Lambert. Or the cheap Polish corner-shop kind, which could be anything (sometimes Richmond).

Nowadays I’m a little cautious and hesitant about smoking in public because you never know which gossiping eyes are watching you. I don’t smoke often now so if I’m spotted by someone who recognises me they might assume the wrong thing but at the end of the day everyone’s doing life for themselves first and foremost. It’s not so much about what other people think.

I think Richmond was my first cigarette, I used to go out of the house, and into a field and light up, thought I was quite the rebel

I remember being about 13 and writing a note in block capitals that was from my "Grandad" saying he was staying with us as he had broken his leg and could the shopkeeper please sell his granddaughter 20 fags as he was unable to get to the shops. It bloody worked too - that note lasted me till I was almost 16 and received my NI Card in the post that most shops took as ID for being 16!!

I think it was three months after the smoking ban that the age for buying cigarettes got raised from 16 to 18 so things were never going to be as strict back in the day about things like that to be fair. I still think it should’ve stayed 16 but that’s a different discussion altogether isn’t it.

There was certainly no challenge-25 back then either. Some people take pleasure in asking the same person over and over until the day they turn 26 (you’re only supposed to do it once or until you remember them) but the whole thing’s a bit ridiculous. If you’re old enough to be sixth-form/college age you’re going to get your hands on cigarettes anyway if that’s what you want to do. Just like taxing alcohol now and introducing plain-packet packaging I just see these things as unnecessary.

The ice cream van parked at the school gates sold singles for 10p and had a queue every break

I remember buying singles (I feel like the brand was Pall-Mall but I can’t be sure). I would’ve been 15, I can’t lie.

It's not that different now with vapes to be fair, they'll sell those little cheap ones to kids all day long.

Have to say though - I've never encountered anywhere that sold single cigarettes.

When I was in my mid teens (around 2000) nowhere ID's though. Pubs were happy enough so long as you didn't look like an actual child, and there were multiple small shops that would sell cigarettes and alcohol to basically anyone over about 14.

I think there are probably more "mystery shoppers" around these days or something, I know it's not as easy for the kidz to get their booze these days.

Also everyone I knew had dodgy fake ID's bought for £10 off the internet. COMPLETELY unconvincing but so many places accepted them, even proper bars & clubs in town .
