The latest edition of the comic 2000 AD is titled Closet and deals with the issue of a teenager coming out. The first page appears to show the legendary lawman in a passionate clinch with another man in a gay club, with the caption: "I guess, somehow, I'd always known I was gay. I was just too scared to admit it." The image prompted an extreme reaction from fans of the comic, with some praising the writers for tacking a sensitive topic – and others threatening to burn copies. Hmm... I can't help but think, when writers of established fiction decide to just out a character in the 21st century, that it's a bit of a marketing move. Like when JK just suddenly made Dumbledore gay, and this... it's like, we've revealed everything about their personalities, and btw, they like cock.
I know it's doing wonders for the 'gays are normal people' argument but I just think... if you wanted to be so bold and brave, maybe introduce it before your character makes you millions of pounds.
