As far as I know, GRRM informed the writers of major plot elements (major battles, character deaths, the undead dragon, etc.) so that it wouldn't stray too far from his story, so it's likely that the Jon and Dany storyline is one of those...
As to the thread question; it's a tough call really. The early seasons were much better in terms of character development and political intrigue, the latter ones much better in terms of increasing the dramatic pace and action sequences. I wouldn't say either is better or worse, really... the reason the action in latter seasons has impact is because of the character development from earlier seasons, and likewise, 8 seasons all at a slow / political pace wouldn't have worked and it needed to eventually build to a larger conclusion. I guess compare it to LOTR; you start with a lot of in depth description of the settings, a smaller number of characters all banded together, small individual stories and then by the end you have the huge, sweeping battles. It's the same sort of thing really. |

Also away from having two of the protagonists having an incestuous relationship with each other, the rushed nature of it is also dire imo, they meet up in episode 3 of season 7, yet they start having mad feelings for each other by episode 5 of season 7 which no matter how the show tries to brush it up is dire writing imo. Tbf it's not my only issue with the later on seasons compared to earlier seasons, it's just it stands out a lot more than most of the other ropey elements in the later seasons (maybe with the exception of The Sparrow storyline) so it's why I mentioned it as one of the biggest problems with the programme for me personally.

It's just like any show as it gets older it does have more ropey writing now compared to the early days.

Other than that, I've only seen clips on youtube of the major events (Ned's beheading, Joffrey's death etc) It's ironic that I'm not into this show that much since I love anything Fantasy related (The Lord of the Rings being my all time fav Fantasy work ) I'll try to watch all 7 seasons in time for the last season |

Incest aside (lolz), the attempted murder of Bran was pretty much the worst thing Jaime has done thus far, and it wasn't a random act it was to try to cover up something (yes something... err... very dodgy) that would have destroyed him / his family / the royal line. The rest of what he's could all be considered simple wartime tactics, and his tactics are actually "cleaner" than a lot of others, including bonafide "good guys" like Daenerys and Tyrion. He's shown (again, incest aside!) personal morals many times right from the start. He respected Ned and was horrified when he was executed. He's tried to help various characters and Spoiler: In contrast; Spoiler: The list goes on of course. "Good" characters are few and far between in GoT. Jon Snow, Brienne, I suppose Sam (but he's pretty much just a Jon Snow sidekick). You have a few outright nasty ones like Joffrey and Ramsay Snow. Cersei is borderline nasty but the character's reasons are well developed. No one else on the "bad side" is really much worse than most of those on the "good side". But then, that's kind of the point. |

I think they illustrate the whole thing well with Jamie and Tyrion's relationship. They like each other, as brothers they're good "friends", they laugh and enjoy each other's company every time they meet. But they have thus far very rarely found themselves on the same side when it comes to war / the bigger picture.

And tbf every season does normally pack a punch (even the ropey season 5) so you'll never feel like you're wasting your time watching any given season. My favourite characters are Tyrion, Arya, Little Finger, Varys, Cersei, and Joffry (although not many will agree with me on this one lol) and one of my main issues in the later on seasons for me is all of my favourites have either been killed off, became underdeveloped, or given terrible storylines whilst besides the incestuous storyline for Jon, he gets all of the big battles and events nowadays, the show has lost it's balance a little bit for me personally, but as I've already said the show always has it's moments and if you're a Jon Snow fan then season 5-7 will be a blast for you.

I have a theory why the Jon/Danerys love story is vital to how the story ends and not just a lets cave to the Shippers type thing

What's the best season? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't season 4 its peak? Everyone was talking about it back in 2014. Joffrey's hatred was at an all time high

i've liked every series, but each for different reasons. GoT is quite unique because it sees the good in bad characters and also the bad in good characters.
I'm not a fan of Jon Snow so I hope he gets taken out .... everyone is kind of expecting him to be victorious .... which is always a bad place to be on GoT |
