The Cure.

They actually make albums that actually ... how do I put this ... sound different? Beautiful, lucid, visual songs. Not boring, straight up rawk and rawl for the lager generation.

The Cure - Amazing and influential band
Arctic Monkeys - Everyday indie overhyped to hell.

The Cure for sure.

Everyday indie
Nice! That should be the genre section they are placed inside in record stores!

Imo, Arctic monkeys kinda revolutionised Indie music in this era..then loads of bands followed suit.

They are fcking epic.

How so? They are just really, really popular. They didn't 'revolutionize' anything. Not that all bands have to, of course, but when people over hype them by saying that I just don't get it.

What are they doing new?

Shaun

The Strokes, The Hives, The Libertines were all doing what the Arctic Monkeys were before them, and much better too.

Stu
06-12-2009, 09:13 PM
Let's not forget The Arctic Monkey's are some of the biggest culprits on the planet of using dynamic range compression techniques in the studio as a cheap way of blending all the sounds into one unimaginative, noisy, cluttered mess so it get's noticed more on the radio in the VOLUME WARS.

The result, take for instance 'I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor', is a bombardment of the most unsubtle, one-dimensional noise known to man.

I guess, but its just what I think!

I love how dirty rock they sound, if you get what I mean? And brilliant riffs

They would be better if they had done more albums like the first, as the 3rd album was generally ****

I quite like Alex Turners lyrics, especially of the first album. Anything after that is hit and miss

I hate when people say that, it's such a stereotype. The really melogoth Cure stuff was only in the early part of the bands career. In fact, the vast majority of the material has a positive spin to it. Just look at the the most commercial singles : Just A Day, Lovecats, Friday I'm In Love, Close To Me, Just Like Heaven, Pictures Of You ... hardly miserable!

I agree though it's a strange poll. Two completely different bands. Popularity contest I suppose.

i have the greatest hits which if you want the new order type of pop they did then yep they have done sunny pop stuff but a vast majority of their sound is really downbeat.

i would have put New order or D. Mode up agaisn't them

I agree the music sounds downbeat but then the Cure did always have a fetish for low brow plodding baselines . The lyrical content is a different story though.

i love the Cure's pop stuff you can't knock it and probably would have been even bigger if they stuck to that sound but i admire them for not taking it easy on their fans :joker:

Smith is a great lyric writer

To be fair Arctic Monkeys got the record for the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history. Not alot of 'indie' bands could say that around that time. Plus the first album was more rock.

Former Depeche Mode keyboardist Alan Wilder, describing the current state of the music industry in an article for Side-Line magazine, used the Arctic Monkeys as an example in his criticism of the use of dynamic range compression in modern recording techniques, calling the song "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor", "a bombardment of the most unsubtle, one-dimensional noise."

Alan Wilder, Depeche Mode? He did an article awhile back. I find it to be a great phrase. So I used it. I don't see the big deal. It's hardly as if I robbed a bank. I know where I got it from. And it wasn't Wikipedia.

Also ArsenalForever I know AM's were big before NME jumped onto them but they did help propel them.

Christ, I'm sorry I ever went against the almighty Monkeys.

Im just saying you tried to make that sound like it was your opinion that you came up with. Also I already said I do think they were over hyped at the beginning but I think it was with good reason......3 number 1 albums in 3 years.....you can clearly see theyve grown as a band and as for this "bombardment of one dimensional music" i'd say have a listen to humbug....it split fans completely.......nothing like the first 2 albums

crazy fan rant over/

Well ... it was. I thought the Arctic Monkey's were overrated and used cheap studio techniques [Black Eyed Peas are also huge culprits of it] long before Alan Wilder tied me to a chair and hypnotized me into thinking it :conf:.

I just paraphrased the guy because he put it better than I ever could. It's pointless saying 'as Alan Wilder once said' because most people on this forum have no idea who he is .

That's not strictly true. They were big from the start but quickly changed when Vince Clarke left to form Yazoo after Speak & Spell. Whenever they felt they were getting to poppy they backlashed against that.

because they really aren't. and the cure's longevity / influence outshines them.

never said they were:joker: but they are going in the right direction of becoming great. I agree the cure are out since 1978 of course they have more influence but the monkeys have sold out tours and broke records so early in their career shouldn't be looked down upon
