Terrible. You'd really think that they'd be above 8.9m if you consider the fact that this storyline's been promoted to hell.

For the record, I only supply ratings for the main soaps (i.e. EastEnders, Coronation Street, Waterloo Road and Emmerdale), so don't ask me to change that, and I only do figures to one decimal place and shares to the nearest whole number, but if you want me to change that, just ask and I'll do that. :)

Here are the yearly averages for EastEnders from 2002-2010:
2010: 09.35m
2009: 08.43m
2008: 08.42m
2007: 08.88m
2006: 09.16m
2005: 10.20m
2004: 11.32m
2003: 12.57m
2002: 11.95m
So 2005 was the last time EastEnders was regularly hitting double-digit figures (i.e. 10 million and above). I understand the above is a lot to read but it really is quite interesting to see how the ratings have developed.

I think Hollyoaks is more of a main soap than Waterloo Road. I know the ratings are lower but WR only shows once a week, so it's not fair to really call it a "main soap".
But don't worry I'm not asking you to change it ;)

I'll supply those in a minute. I know it's difficult to believe that 2004rated so well, but it was actually a good year, minus all those Ferrairas.

That would be great, Salman. I was actually going to ask, because it does get a bit irritating me posting figures week in, week out, with no one helping - to be honest, it really is quite frustrating. No wonder poor Mollie gave up - she posted them week in, week out - without fail - and nobody even gave her so much as a thank you, despite her doing a fantastic job. That simply isn't on.
You weren't there at this time, though, so don't worry - and, even then, I'm not even saying all that to rude to anyone, but it did indeed come to my attention.
But, no, Salman, thanks a lot for that, and it would be great if you did. Thanks for offering, too. :)

A lot of that will be down to catch up services though, people aren't as worried about missing them coz they can either record them on whatever box they've got , or watch it online

Yeah, that is quite true, to be honest, but shows can still reach great hights if they're good enough. In 2004, for example, episodes centered around the Ferrairas could reach 11 million. I'm not saying it was bad, but there's no denying it had some terrible storylines.
On the contrary, the soaps really do need to be on the top of their games to get 10 million, let alone 12 million.

By the way, here are Coronation Street's 2002-2010 averages, if anyone's interested:
2010: 09.67m
2009: 09.23m
2008: 09.51m
2007: 10.16m
2006: 11.19m
2005: 11.07m
2004: 12.10m
2003: 13.23m
2002: 11.96m
So 2007 was the last time Coronation Street had an average of at least 10m.
Redway
13-04-2012, 01:03 AM
Enmerdale's:
2010: 7.23m
2009: 6.73m
2008: 6.93m
2007: 7.46m
2006: 7.63m
2005: 8.63m
So 2010 was the first time since the records began in 2005 that the ratings were up.

To be honest, those sort of ratings are very typical for this time of year and it's been that way since 2009. Anything below 7.5m, though, would be very poor. It's the share that's more important in the spring and summer and it really shouldn't be going below 35%. The ratings and shares can be a lot better, but I suppose we'll have to settle for those for now.

No, it isn't proof. I'm extremely negative about EastEnders right now, you should know that, but the ratings are still pretty decent. I hate the show right now, but the ratings are all right.
Redway
27-04-2012, 11:33 PM
In fact, the equivalent day 2010 had 8.1m (39%) - check page 4 of this thread. That is only a drop of 0.3m and 2010 had the biggest ratings rise since the records began in 2002.
Exactly. When someone chooses to ignore the facts and make false assumptions based on pleothas upon pleathos of abortive traits and objective statements that are actually false, it's very difficult to take that person seriously, let alone have a debate with him or her. Listen, you said that EastEnders is very poor right now (with which I agree), but you used the viewing figures as one piece of evidence to support your argument. I pointed out to you that the ratings are fine, which works to my advantage and your disadvantage, so what now? Does this prove to you that the current quality at least is subjective and not what you (of all people) say it is?

Joe, you used the ratings to support your argument and now you've been proven wrong you don't care about the numbers? What is the point in starting an argument based on a supporter to your argument and then when you're proven wrong you brush it off and say you don't care? Oh, well. Wasted enough of my time on this. Yeah, but the good thing is the shares (%) are still stable, which just proves that more people are making the most of the sunshine instead of watching television. Normally, 6.5m would be around 30% but throughout the week that 30% has been more suited to fit 34-36% because about 4-6% of people aren't watching television.

To be fair, it's the middle of a heatwave summer (and even then so many people are on holiday). What's really important right now is the proportion of people watching, i.e. the audience share. 35% is reasonable for them.

All those stories bar one or two have been dire and only passable as filler. I'm not Santer's biggest fan but he did manage to get people talking about the show and there were several solid stories a year. I'm yet to hear people in Iceland talking about Kat and Alfie's latest relationship woes or Lauren's badly acted alcoholism story.
2013 gas been the worst year in the show's history. Nothing of note has actually happened.
