Aston Villa Football Club (pronounced /ˈæstən ˈvɪlə/) (also known as The Villa, Villa and The Villans) is an English professional football club based in Aston, Birmingham, who play in the Premier League. The club was founded in 1874 and have played at their current home ground, Villa Park, since 1897. Aston Villa were founder members of The Football League in 1888. They were also founder members of the Premier League in 1992. The club was floated by the previous owner and chairman Doug Ellis, but in 2006 full control of the club was acquired by Randy Lerner.
They are one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in England, having won the First Division Championship seven times and the FA Cup seven times. Villa also won the 1981–82 European Cup, one of only four English clubs to win what is now the UEFA Champions League. Aston Villa has the fourth highest total of major honours won by an English club.

Villa are poised to reward midfield star James Milner with a money-spinning new contract worth an estimated £12m.
The midfield star looks set to land a new four-year deal before jetting to the World Cup with England.
And reports this morning claimed the 24-year-old weekly pay packet could grow from £45,000 per week at present to around £65,000, putting him on a par with the club’s highest earners.
Boss Martin O’Neill said: “I said to James that regardless of the England situation, we would sit down in the summer.
“He has two years left, but it would be important that we do something if we can. He has been absolutely fantastic.
“Without doubt he’s enjoying his football. Some of his performances have been electrifying. Now he’s reached double figures from midfield which is great.
“Since he has moved into the centre, it has thrust him to the forefront and he has excelled.
“I have phenomenal regard for Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, but James is playing as well as anybody right now.”
Meanwhile, O’Neill has warned forgotten man Curtis Davies he will have to bide his time and wait for an opportunity.
The defender has made just one appearance – as a second-half substitute against Brighton – since his return from a shoulder injury in January and has failed to make the bench for Villa’s last four games.
Boss Martin O’Neill admits the form of Richard Dunne and James Collins at the heart of the defence has made Davies’ job of forcing his way back in even harder.
And he says the 25-year-old former Albion skipper must stay patient – and seize his chance when it comes along.
“Curtis has been out of action now really since the end of August,” said O’Neill. “He’s played a couple of reserve games.
“When you consider here how well Luke (Young) has done for us and how unfortunate he is not to be in the team that might tell you something. I don’t think Curtis will be an issue when we get him fully fit, it’s a matter of him getting that opportunity. When you get it you have to grasp it.”

Manchester City will offer £20million plus a choice of players to lure James Milner from Aston Villa.
City boss Roberto Mancini is so desperate to tie up the England midfielder that he is preparing to go all out in negotiations.
He will leave the £20million Villa have already refused on the table but will also let Martin O’Neill take his pick of one of four players.
England internationals Micah Richards and Shaun Wright Phillips, under-21 star Nedum Onuoha and Stephen Ireland will be offered on top of the cash to tempt O’Neill to give up the fight for his prized player.
However O’Neill is determined to do everything he can to repel City’s advances and is desperate not to lose his Milner to City.
Villa chiefs will meet Milner before the World Cup in a desperate bid to keep him.
Milner is tempted by a possible switch to Eastlands where he could expect to double his £45,000-a-week wages.
But Villa haven’t given up on keeping Milner on a new lucrative contract.
And chief executive Paul Faulkner has agreed to hold talks with Milner and his PFA representatives before the star jets to South Africa on June 2.
Villa owner Randy Lerner and boss Martin O’Neill may attend the talks if they are in the country on either May 31 or June 1 when Milner is free before flying out on international duty.
He is not likely to agree or sign a new Villa contract before the World Cup but Villa hope a verbal agreement could be followed by formal signing when he returns from South Africa.

Aston Villa have held talks with England international James Milner after he returned to the club on Monday for training.
The 24-year-old has been tipped to join Manchester City this summer with the ambitious club keen to land to talented midfielder.
Milner had been given an extended period off by Villa this summer after participating in the World Cup finals in South Africa.
The ex-Newcastle and Leeds man is believed to want a move to City, but until they match Villa's asking price he will stay at the club.
Villa have now held amicable talks with Milner and confirmed he will travel with them ahead of this weekend's Guadiana Cup.
Talks
"James Milner trained with the rest of the Villa squad (Monday) at Bodymoor Heath," read a Villa statement.
"He and the manager along with the chief executive Paul Faulkner and the player's representative Matthew Buck had an amicable conversation.
"While James will not play in (Tuesday's game) against Walsall he will fly with the squad to Portugal on Wednesday ahead of the Guadiana Cup, in which Villa will compete with Benfica and Feyenoord this weekend."

Oh and I happened to come across a Villa site, fan with some good comments about Young at United and kind words about his time at Villa but listed a few negatives so fair. Some of the comments at the bottom were not positive ha ha.
Fan then talks about Albrighton and saying that he's starting to become a bit predictable and needs to improve if he's going to be in the side more regularly.

Ashley was a petulant brat here last year, thought he was a 'in the hole' player but clearly wasn't, which is being outlined at his time at United so far..
He took all the set pieces, fell over easily, gobbed off at the ref, pointed to his name when he scored etc etc..Downing was far far better than him
Most don't begrudge his move though, because they know he is quality and he hasn't been a twat about moving unlike Gareth Barry and Downing
Albrighton has got a good cross, but he isn't great tracking back and give away too many silly fouls. Don't think he is a mcleish player at all

I do agree that Young's mind was elsewhere in his last season at Villa but he kept his head down professionally and finally left on gracious terms.
No disrespect to Villa but he is clearly thriving playing with better players and being given the chance to up his game.
Albrighton just needs to step up to the mark as he has got the talent to be in Villa's first team.

Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Danish international Simon Poulsen.
The 27-year-old AZ Alkmaar left-sider is out of contract at the end of the season.
Poulsen, who can play full-back or in midfield, is now attracting interest from a host of clubs.
Aston Villa have now emerged as one of those keeping close tabs on him.
It is understood that Villa scout Arthur Numan has already watched Poulsen on several occasions and delivered positive reports back to his bosses in the Midlands.

Aston Villa have told talkSPORT Darren Bent is not for sale at any price.
The England striker has been the subject of strong rumours about a possible move to Liverpool this month – but the club have told talkSPORT they have not had any contact with the Anfield outfit and that no bid will be entertained.
There have been suggestion Bent was heading to Liverpool, with Andy Carroll returning on loan to Newcastle to replace Demba Ba, who will be away on African Cup of Nations duty with Senegal this month.
Despite not enjoying the service he was used to last season when Ashley Young and Stewart Downing were at the club, Bent has weighed in with six Premier League goals in a Villa side that has struggled all season to create chances.

I think the way SAF is looking at it is that now Managers don't get much time/patience to do their jobs where as the days when he started out it was different then, although he is lucky to have so much freedom and control at Manchester United for so long...
It is difficult for the current Managers with so much pressure on their shoulders, although this McLeish thing was doomed from the start...

Faulkner and Lerner can **** off. bunch of mugs
Alex McLeish will never win the battle with the Aston Villa supporters over his brand of football.
Wednesday 25 April 2012
It is difficult to know what the endgame is for an owner who is in charge of a club with no obvious purpose at the moment
There is no point skirting the issue. Alex McLeish's position has become untenable and it is almost inconceivable to think that he will still be the Aston Villa manager at the start of next season, irrespective of what division the club are in. When "**** Off McLeish, the Villa is ours" and "Sack McLeish, my lord" rang around the stadium in the closing stages of Tuesday night's highly damaging 2-1 home defeat by Bolton Wanderers, it was the majority, not a noisy minority, singing in unison.
Villa fans never accepted McLeish in the first place and they want him out. Plain and simple. The brutal truth is that it is never going to work with McLeish in charge and anyone that still thinks otherwise is deluded. Randy Lerner, the Villa owner, and Paul Faulkner, the chief executive, must be able to see that now, even if they refused to believe that was the case when they made the extraordinary decision to appoint the Scot in the summer.
Extraordinary not because McLeish came from Villa's rivals, Birmingham City. Extraordinary because McLeish had just suffered his second relegation with Birmingham in three Premier League seasons. And extraordinary because he is synonymous with a brand of football that, to borrow the former Villa manager Graham Taylor's recent description, "looks [like] you are preparing a side not to lose".
This season has been abysmal and the statistics make for painful reading. Villa have won only seven league matches all season, the lowest in the division with the exception of already relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers. Only Wigan have scored fewer than the 19 goals Villa have managed in 18 home fixtures. McLeish's side have won only four league games at Villa Park and just one in the past five months, meaning that they are guaranteed to finish the season with the worst home record in the club's history.
Against that backdrop, it is little wonder that there is so much apathy surrounding the club. There were 10,000 empty seats inside Villa Park for the Bolton game, which has been a common theme this season. Villa's average attendance is 33,755, which is more than 6,000 down on the peak of four years ago and nine per cent down on last season, when Gérard Houllier's side flirted with relegation. Since August, only Blackburn Rovers have lost fans at a quicker rate than Villa. In fact more fans watched Villa in David O'Leary's last season, when the club finished 16th and supporters held up a banner that said: "We're not fickle, we just don't like you."
Lerner made a rare visit to Villa Park on Tuesday night and it must have been sobering and galling for the American to see first-hand evidence of just how far the club has fallen in such a short space of time. Two years ago today, Villa beat Birmingham City 1-0 to move level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with two games of the season remaining. On Saturday, they travel to West Bromwich Albion only three points clear of the relegation zone.
All of which means that Villa have gone from the verge of the Champions League to the brink of the Championship in the blink of an eye; a journey which must be particularly hard for Lerner to come to terms with when he looks at a balance sheet that shows he has pumped upwards of £200m (including £133m invested in return for shares) into a club that is underperforming on the pitch and haemorrhaging money off it. Villa posted a £54m loss for the year to 31 May 2011.
Indeed, it is difficult to know what the endgame is for an owner who is in charge of a club with no obvious purpose at the moment, other than to avoid the ignominy of relegation for the first time in 25 years. There are, admittedly, some mitigating circumstances for a woeful run that has seen Villa pick up only one victory from their last 13 league matches, not least the long-term absence of senior and influential players, such as the top scorer Darren Bent, the captain Stilian Petrov and the central defender Richard Dunne. Yet even with those players in the team, Villa were making hard work of things, grinding out the odd victory.
All of which strikes a chord with McLeish's time at Birmingham. Even in his best league season at St Andrew's, in 2009-10, when Birmingham came ninth place – their highest top-flight finish since 1959 – it was anything but pretty to watch, with McLeish's side scoring only 38 goals in as many games. Last season Birmingham scored only 37, less than a goal a game. This season Villa have scored 36 in 35 matches. In other words, a pattern is starting to emerge and it is one where entertaining football is absent.
There are other uncomfortable parallels to be drawn with last season, when Birmingham's campaign followed a broadly similar pattern to Villa's this term, as form fell away badly at a critical stage. Indeed, this time last year, Birmingham were 15th in the table, as is the case with Villa now, but had a four- rather than three-point cushion over the bottom three with three games remaining. Birmingham lost all three matches and went down.
A repeat of that form on the run-in and the chances are that Villa will suffer the same fate, leaving McLeish with three Premier League relegations on his CV. Lerner would surely be forced to intervene should that happen, although if common sense prevails both parties will agree at the end of the season to go their separate ways whether Villa survive or not. McLeish, after all, is not going to win this battle and Lerner has an investment to protect. As for the supporters, they just want to enjoy going to Villa Park again.

Chris Herd, James Collins and Fabian Delph were threatened with the police when trouble flared outside Broad Street’s Gatecrasher venue early on Tuesday.
All three have apologised to the fans for their behaviour and the club have fined them with the proceeds going to charity.
Exclusive video footage of the bust-up, given to the Birmingham Mail, shows Herd – his shirt open down to his chest to reveal a distinctive tattoo near his neck – kicking the club’s glass doors in a confrontation with staff. He is joined by Collins and Delph in the expletive-laden melee.

The wall that Villa has for fans to write messages of support to Stan Petrov is good:).
Still 0-0 vs Spurs currently.

More doom and gloom, worrying times for Villa ahead again.

You want that from the players, not from the crap manager.
But at least he hasn't gotten them relagated this season.

Alex McLeish had an habit of playing players in positions that they do not normally play in and weren't comfortable there, so this affected Villa's speedy counter on the wings to link up with the attack.
The defence needs a shake up too because quite a few goals were conceded from corners.

Villa used to play some nice attacking Football, even under the one last season can't remember his name again now, but ever since Mcleish tookover you's have played so boring imo, it was like watching us all over again.

Ole would do a brilliant job at Villa I think:D. I'm not actually sure whether he would come back to England as his young kids are settled back in Norway now and he had always intended on going back there...
