Smoking should be banned in all cars as well as in public places where young people congregate, doctors are urging.
The Royal College of Physicians wants England's imminent review of anti-smoking laws to consider such measures to protect the young.
It says passive smoking results in 300,000 extra child visits to GPs in the UK every year for problems such as asthma and bacterial meningitis.
But driving and smoking lobby groups (big tobacco companies) say cars are a "private space".
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
This makes perfect sense and it is a horrible thing to do in a car and totally greedy and unnecessary

I don't smoke - gave up 6 years ago - but I think this is taking things too far. What will be next? You can't smoke in your own house?
The Nanny State strikes again.
Ban it if there are kids in the car. Otherwise just leave it
The fumes are 3000 times more toxic in a car because of such a small space.

If they want to smoke their brains out in their own car let them, provided of course that they're on their own. As for the health issues, I'm sure that they'll have paid for any medical care they may need later on in life through the huge taxes that governments place on tobacco.

If there isn't a blanket ban in force - how do they stop people smoking with children or unconsenting adults in the car - who can't or don't like to say anything?
Well, they could introduce a confidential phoneline for people to ring if they see anyone breaking that law, like they do in the States with regard to the carpool lanes. Another deterrent anyway and sure there's so many cameras pointed on the roads nowadays that it would be hard to have a puff without them spotting you.
Niamh.
24-03-2010, 11:07 AM
Although I agree in theory that people should be allowed to smoke in their own cars - unfortunately it isn't that black and white!
Not that up on the smoking laws, so not fully aware of what it covers - but although many parents wouldn't smoke with their children in the car - many would! Children need to be protected from those parents! Information and education is always the best way to promote such issues - but sometimes enforcement may be the only way!
If there isn't a blanket ban in force - how do they stop people smoking with children or unconsenting adults in the car - who can't or don't like to say anything?
A ban on smoking with children in the car fine. But telling me I can't smoke in my car that I paid for is just not on.

they do not equate as only excessive consumption of both cause that and they have no side effects to others in moderate consumption

Because some people choose to eat/drink in moderation, it's all about choices that I don't want taken away from me.

Exactly. If people don't like it then wind the window down and shut up.
Personally I don't let anyone smoke in my car and thats my choice- its the decision of the driver, not the passengers. If they don't like it then either wind the window down and shut up or get out and find another way to travel.
Fair enough if its kids, but adults? Nah.

Yeah I think they should put a blanket ban on smoking in cars, however in return for this I think that the hard shoulder of all motorways should be declared a designating smoking area. All roads should have smokers stops just like bus stops that can only be used by smokers. And because of the amount of money raised by the taxes on tobacco, the NHS should have a two tier system whereby smokers receive higher priority for all treatment.

Because government has yet to find a way to control and tax imports of those substances.

I agree a ban in the car where passengers are involved but otherwise if a solitary person wants to smoke them selves to death......That's their stupid choice.......However in practice enforcing a ban would be as good as impossible........So whats the point!!!!!!!!!!!

Its called nanny state. Those that do not value their health the state sees fit to try and force them to value their health..........Unenforcable of course.......There is a wider debate however.......those damaging their health do put a strain on the health service costs in the long run so there is method in the madness of nanny state mentality........
Also smokers have no regard for their partners and children if the shoud become ill or die as a result of an avoidable bad rather selfish habit.......

Well, the costing the state bit I disagree with, I think I more than pay my share on the huge taxes put on cigarettes!
And yes, I see where you're coming from with the last comment but it is not done out of selfishness or disregard for my children or husband thank you very much, I was already addicted before I had either.

Of course the fact that lots smokers get lung cancer and die relatively quickly due to the fast acting nature of lung cancer, without receiving a lot of expensive treatment, from the NHS which has in turn received lots of money via the tax on tobacco from them. Also insurance premiums etc are more expensive for smokers, there is also the element of tax on that. Smokers and smoking takes out a lot less than it puts into the state.
Its not so much smokers, its doctors calling for the ban, smoking is an easy target, after all they would just be ignored if they called for more effective catalytic converters on all vehicles or even more effective emission control on aircraft, two factors that have been proven to have a greater direct effect on childhood asthma. - Jobs for the boys.

The taxes on cigarettes would go no where to cover the cost of treating cancer and heart disease so that is I am afraid a smoker in denial of the habit and its consequences.........Smoking is an addiction that can be broken if not for yourself you should not be selfish about the consequences to your wife and children if they have to face the possibility of watching a slow lingering death due to smoking..........Their mental well being is being ignored is it not...!!!!!!

What complete and utter garbage, lung canver is very fast and invasive as is liver and stomach cancers in most cases. So the smoker stops before any of that develops and then lasts into his or her 80's or even longer, the burden on the state then increases astronomically, not only in health care terms but also in the other little things the state pays for, you know things like an old age pension, concessionary fares etc etc.
If it did cost so much more to the state, this labour government would have banned smoking completely well before now.

First of all I do not have a wife I have a husband as I am female.
Secondly I still beg to differ on your theory about how much tax I've already paid and will continue to pay on the price of cigarettes.
Thirdly how dare you accuse me of not caring about my family.

currently tax on cigarettes in Ireland is 61.3% which is €5.21 per pack that I buy, I smoke 1 pack a day over 52 weeks over 15 years, so so far I've paid around €28446

No it isnt, the vast majority of cancers claimed to be caused by smoking like lung cancer etc are relatively fast acting, by the time the patient is diagnosed its more often than not too late for any effective treatment.
I dont smoke but I am not fascist enough to inflict my wishes on those who want to. I agree with the ban on smoking in enclosed spaces wherever there are or even likely to be non smokers however I fail to see how a ban on smoking in cars where children are transported can be enforced without a complete on smoking in any vehicles. Because then the government are removing a freedom from smokers who would never have kids in the car anyway, what measures are going to be introduced to compensate for this? Smokers only pulling places on all roads? Guaranteed smokers only car parking areas?
And you still havent accepted that the only reason the Government doesnt ban it outright is because it brings into Treasury coffers more revenue than it costs. If it created a negative costing to the Health Service the government would have not only a moral duty of care but a fiscal duty to ban it outright, however its a nice little earner.
A bus driver started smoking once. There were babies and children on that bus, yet he thought it would be okay for him to light up while we were waiting in a traffic jam. Needless to say, he got an ear full.

Yes, because it's just that simple isn't it...
We're not all clean-living, god-fearing, Ned Flanders wannabe's LT. Some of us like to make our own choices, and that includes the choices which affect our own health and well-being. I, personally, do not subject my children to any unnecessary health risks, nor do I smoke for that matter. I'm well aware of the dangers of smoking, and I still support the right of adults to smoke in their own car or their own home. If I didn't want to be subjected to second hand smoke, I'd not get in their car. Simple as that.
It's not quite as black/white as you make it out to be, so, do me a favour, and don't patronise me.
