Sounds like the opening might have just been for this year

We are preparing for the biggest stunt we have ever staged here at Corrie, as our show's 50th anniversary approaches.

Disaster will strike on the cobbles as the viaduct near the Kabin collapses sending a tram careering off the bridge and onto the Street.

Coronation Street will never be the same again as much-loved people are killed and injured and the community is left reeling by the devastating effects of the tragedy.

To ensure the crash is as sensational as possible, special effects experts are being brought in.

Our producers are keeping the exact details of the special week of episodes, building up to the anniversary on 9 December, under wraps, even going to the lengths of issuing alternative scripts.

Not even our cast and crew know which residents will die and the drama will continue into 2011 as the people of Weatherfield come to terms with the tragedy and the dramatic twists and turns that follow.

Our Corrie producer Phil Collinson said: “As we celebrate the show reaching such an incredible milestone it feels fitting that we will be screening an event of this magnitude which will affect the lives of all the residents of Coronation Street. We’ll be using all the wonders of modern television production to bring you a disaster that will rock the lives of everyone in Weatherfield. At the heart of the drama though will be ordinary people on an ordinary street battling adversity – the template for the programme created by Tony Warren 50 years ago.”

The image of the tram going across the viaduct at the Corner Shop end of the street has been an integral part of the opening titles of Corrie for the past 9 years.

Scarlett.
07-07-2010, 12:07 PM
Well the tram will apparently crash right through the street, meaning its likely, the untouched part of the street will be damaged by it, Rita is most likely going to be killed off, as she lives right next to it

Jords

its near the 2 shops 'the new factory' which could open up lots of people in that area the pub is the other end of street so dont think that will be touched

I can see the tram either going down the middle of the street, or going right through the Corner Shop

Big stunts don't always equal quality, it'll take more then special effects to top EE's anniversary I think as the Archie storyline was one of the best EE stories in years.

It's all about the quality of the drama rather then the explosions.

Let's hope the show isn't unfortunate enough to coincide with a real life tragedy again and have the episodes pushed back yet again.

I'm surprised they're doing another big stunt within the same year. And 60 cast members? I didn't realise there were that many (on that tiny street lol).

And I thought ITV were struggling for money.

Scarlett.
07-07-2010, 04:50 PM
Aye, maybe they could correct some of the current mistakes (sometimes part of the set is caught in shot (behind The Kabin/Garage) and the viaduct ends there, the street will look quite different after this, it'd be good if they had some sort of memorial on the street too

Can't wait for this, just watched the TM interview online and couldn't quite believe it when Phil said the tram is going to crash into the street. Got a bad feeling about the older characters such as Rita and Emily. I think this will kill Molly off as well because she's leaving isn't she?

lol I was like "" while he was talking about it, I cant actually believe Corrie are doing it xD I dont think Emily will go, but Rita is quite likely to go IMO, she lives and works next to the viaduct, I wonder if the tram crashes as it collapses or a minute afterwards?

Is Cheryl sticking around? If she is I could see her being killed off to give Lloyd a new route

Scarlett.
07-07-2010, 05:43 PM
I feel sorry for siege week, it could have been so much better if Kim Crowther wasnt behind it xD

One thing, obviously CGI will be used during the crash, but during the aftermath how will they show it? the viaduct is a facade for a building

All I kept hearing was major cast members being killed off and it just ended up being Tony Gordon and his henchman who was in like what 3 or 4 episodes lol.

That was done by Kim though, all her big storylines were a let down, where as Phil wants to lead us off the trail by releasing false stories to the press

RichardWells

Reason #1 there isnt a tram stop in Coronation Street, it would be cool to see scenes on a tram, but it would cost quite a bit on location

The tram was apparently used in Kelly's exit and it is likely it will be shown a lot more now that its getting a big part xD

EXCLUSIVE: No one safe in tram death crash storyline

Coronation Street bosses have told the show's cast that NO ONE is safe from a dramatic tram-death storyline.

Corrie actors were given the bombshell news at a meeting on set - and now say they feel like they are performing with an axe hanging over their heads.

The horrific death drama, with a tram crashing from the viaduct at the end of the cobble-stoned street to the road below, is to mark the show's 50th anniversary in December. And none of the cast will know who dies in the Christmas bloodbath until hours before the episode is aired.

Instead producers are planning a "who shot Phil Mitchell-type mystery" - which left fans of rival soap Eastenders hooked. Lots of different endings will be shot.

But the idea has caused outrage among Corrie actors and has put them on a collision course with bosses on the ITV1 soap.

Matters came to a head last week when the show's producer Phil Collinson, 42, called a summit meeting in the set's green room and told stars: "None of you are safe."

An insider on the show said: "Phil bluntly told them things would be done his way. It was a 'my way or the highway' kind of speech. The cast wanted answers but the only thing they were told is that Phil is the boss and things will be done how he wants.

"Anyone who doesn't like it will have to lump it."

Some of the show's most senior stars including William Roach, 70, who stars as Ken Barlow and Sue Nicholls, 70, who plays Audrey Roberts, are certain to be particularly angry at the actions of show bosses.

Advertisement - article continues below »

Collinson started on the show only six months ago. But he has already made it clear he doesn't care about people's reputations.

Our insider added: "Phil has made it plain that there will be lots of different endings shot for the tram crash scenes. He wants to keep everyone guessing and keep everyone on their toes.

"The mood among cast members is usually fairly upbeat but this has put a real climate of fear around the place. Morale is at an all-time low.

"Some are really worried about their futures and it could be a long five months until the December finale."

Those thought to be most vulnerable include Norris Cole, played by Malcolm Hebden, 70, Dev Alahan, played by Jimmi Harkishin, 45, and Maria Connor, who is played by Samia Smith, 28.

Last week Street legend Betty Driver was the first to go public about the planned cull.

The 90-year-old, who plays Betty "Hotpot" Williams, in the long running soap, said she won't be killed off, insisting she'll still be pulling pints in the Rovers Return in 10 years' time.

The rail crash plot was revealed by Collinson 10 days ago on This Morning TV show. "People are going to be killed," he said. "We will be losing some well-known, well-loved characters.

"We'll be doing everything we can to keep the end secret until it transmits."

You can't blame the cast for being low in morale.

I think it's a shady way of doing business personally.

Not really, the cast should realize this is a soap, and sometimes these things need to be done

Plus I've been informed the press are trying to big up this "unrest" the people who are going will be told in due course, or may already have been told

Well if that's true then the papers are stupid but the fact still remains that you don't treat loyal cast members like they are a piece of nothing.

"it's my way or the highway"

It's lines like that which would make anyone in any job feel uneasy or insecure.

All I'm saying is the long time cast members who have been their for years and years deserve more respect.

Don't get me wrong I'm really looking forward to the storyline as you know, but I don't see the point in just killing people off for the sake of it.

Every death needs to have a reason for it to be happening imo.

And no I don't mean because we need a ratings boost lol.

Metrolink bosses gave the green-light to the Coronation Street tram crash plot – five years after they put the brakes on a similar storyline.

Disaster will strike as the soap celebrates its 50th anniversary later this year, with a number of characters killed and injured in a sensational accident.

Bosses at Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive are co-operating with producers – because the tram and its driver will not appear at fault.

It comes five years after they complained that plans to crash a tram into the Rovers Return would give Metrolink a ‘bad reputation’.

The plot mirrors a similar storyline from 1967 when a train came crashing through the viaduct at the end of the street and Ena Sharples was feared dead under the rubble.

A spokesman for ITV said: “We are delighted to be working closely with GMPTE on this storyline.

“We have assured them that it will be made clear that the crash is in no way the fault of the tram or the driver and they have been very helpful with our research.”

The storyline mooted in 2005 was said to feature the Street’s Claire Peacock, played by Julia Haworth, applying for a job as a tram driver.

Chris Mulligan, GMPTE’s then director general, said at the time that any story involving a tram accident would be ‘questionable’.

He said: “Given Metrolink’s excellent safety record, we felt that such a sensationalist storyline would be both misleading and detrimental to the image of the network.”

The soap denied the decision to scrap the earlier crash plot was taken because of tram bosses’ objections, saying the idea was ditched because there had been two traumatic storylines that year.

Claire went on to become a bus driver, accidentally running down Chesney Battersby-Brown’s dog Schmeichel on her first day.

The new storyline will show the viaduct collapsing at the end of the street – close to the Kabin and the Corner Shop.

It is expected to send a tram careering off the bridge and onto the cobbles, although exact details about the cull of characters are being kept firmly under wraps.

Transport chiefs say the disaster is a ‘very different storyline’ from the previous one, which was an ‘unlikely scenario’ given Metrolink’s safety record.

Susan Wildman, from GMPTE, said: “Given Metrolink’s excellent safety record, we were concerned the storyline might be detrimental to Metrolink’s public image.

“But ITV have assured us that the incident which takes place will not be the fault of either the tram system or the tram itself.

“Having received those assurances, we are pleased to be able to help ITV with their research and preparations for what I am sure will be a very dramatic storyline during Coronation Street’s 50th anniversary year.”

Quote from Phil Collinson

“As we head towards anniversary week secrets and lies cloud the cobbles; Molly’s baby secret, Nick and Leanne’s affair, Carla’s growing obsession with Peter, Becky and Steve’s desperate bid for a child and John Stape’s double life. The drama multiplies and as these storylines reach a shocking climax secrets refuse to stay buried and lies are exposed.

“When a tram then comes crashing off the viaduct it’s the web of deceit these characters have weaved that will see the fabric of the street changed forever, as relationships are broken and some of the show’s most loved residents stare death in the face!”

As well as creating the explosive scenes, special effects will be used to show the rest of the fictional Manchester borough of Weatherfield for the first time, Mr Collinson revealed.

"The special effects work we'll do isn't just about crashing the tram," he explained. "We're going to see Coronation Street in the context of the wider world.

"So we're going to have great big wide shots that show you the rest of Weatherfield. Life has begun and ended at the top and bottom of the street, but for the first time we're going to see the wider world."

I think the show was good up until 2007, then it got crap with successive useless producers. Kim Crowther being the worst. PC has made the show interesting and I'm actually looking forward to each episode again. Roy and Hayley's wedding was one of the best ever, as was the one with the Manchester tart.

Coronation Street 50th. Congratulations.

The first time I started to watch it in mid 70s, my English was so bad, I could not know the deference between London and the Corrie people's accent.

The landlady was Annie Walker and Stan and Hilda Ogden, Elsie Tanner were among big characters I remember.
Bet Lynch was still wearing ultra short mini skirt.:D

Every time I hear the theme tune, I really feel ,,,,,what shall I say,,,,, all Corrie fans know what I mean.
