The singer collected eight awards while wearing the Franc Fernandez-designed outfit, complete with boots, purse and a hat made from cuts of beef.

Cher, who presented the prizes, wrote on her Twitter account that as an "art piece it was astonishing!" and that the meat purse was "genius."

She added: "modern art elicits discussion, introspection & conflict! Everyone's talking about it! BINGO!"

However, animal rights groups condemned the garment.

A statement from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals said that "wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that more people are upset by butchery than are impressed by it."

From an artist's POV it's marvellous. The attention to detail is fascinating and conceptually it's exciting.

It IS art, no matter how you sugar coat it, it's art. Damien Hurst sliced a cow and it's calf in half, pickled it and made millions of £ and won The Turner Prize, basically like the Oscar's of the art community.

I say good on her, I think it's clever on her part knowing that the main thing people pick up on with her other than her music is her fashion sense and as she said "it's got people talking".

Anyway, I'm against vegetarianism so the fact they're complaining doesn't bother me as it seems they always feel the need to showcase their opinions to no avail.

Or course it's art but then so is anything. Art is a subjective relative. Just because something is art does not automatically qualify it for merit.

It's just a crude publicity stunt. A snapshot of her entire career save for the decent pop tunes. Sure she might apply some half baked 'issue' to it later in interviews but it's basically a publicity stunt. Nothing more. Something to get the idiots who buy into it talking.

The media didn't bring her down, the fact she had a meltdown and started smashing up cars with umbrella's down. Anyway you can't compare GaGa and Briteny creatively, Britney has decent vocal's which 9 out of 10 times are autotuned to hell, she has pretty poor writing skills as well, GaGa is getting bigger with every song she released, the new album will be the biggest seling album of next year, If she does go "the same way as Britney" (???) it won't be for a long time.
