vacuous artless morons attract the same sort.

plus most of the users are young. Hopefully there's time for them to develop & mature.

Benjamin

Firstly, everyone has different tastes in music.

Secondly, different generations usually like different genres of music.

Thirdly, it would be dull if everyone liked the same music.

In your opinion.

My taste is very diverse. I love golden oldies like Kate Bush, David Bowie...80s electro like Human league, new order.....right up to pop trash like sclub7, steps, Girls aloud etc

Everybody is entitled to enjoy whatever makes them happy. And not be ashamed. Music is for all occasions and sometimes you just want hear mindless pop that perks you up. Othertimes you may want something more reflective and meaningful. Depends on your mood.

Point is, all types of music has its place.

I agree with the OP, some people's taste on here is LAME like, I know you're young but please, buy a decent pair of ears. Being young isn't an excuse not to appreciate art. But then again, people have different taste but I think a huge majority would agree that today's pop music is crap.

Each to their own.

I like a varying collection of genres, from pop, to jazz, r'n'b to rock or trance. My favourite genre of music is classical though, never gets boring and is the root for a lot o other music genres.

Throw away pop has its place in making money so record companies can take a chance and sign more 'serious' artists. I too hate the way people act like Gaga , BEP, Cheryl Cole and others can actually be taken seriously. They cant, but they do have their place in the music industry and they are a necessary evil.

I don't like any emo/scene/goth bands if you're including me.

The only "emo" bands I like are MCR and 30STM, and they only have a few good songs. :P

I just like bands that sound good, not because of how they look etc, and most of the bands that sound good to me happen to be metal. xD

I don't think I have a crap taste in music. In my group of friends everyone else bar me has a very defined musical taste. I'm like the only only one who could say "oh I like that song" to my mate who only listen to rock, then go over to my other friend who only likes pop trash and say "yeah I love that band too".

Anyhow I think I'm the only one who likes more alternative bands. *sigh*

But this lot are who I've been listening too atm: Lady Gaga (my fave ), 30 Seconds To Mars, Katy Perry, Duck Sauce, Florence + The Machine, Bon Jovi, Queen, Journey, Tommy Sparks, Britney Spears (mainly her old stuff though like her album Britney), Paramore and Hurts.

I think thats a pretty damn diverse and decent musical taste lol!

I like from Elgar through all the decades of music and most singers of those times on to the great OASIS, now people like Killers, Mika,Script etc also are popular with me, I am always open to discovering new singers I haven't listened to like Stacey.X getting me to like Taylor Swift.

I have explored on CD all the old decades of music and to me it seems there has been good and bad music in all decades but music often is a personal thing, many songs capture times in your life, happy and sad ones and also places and people too.

What I like is really great music to me, what others like may not be seen as great music by me but it doesn't mean it is bad. Its just different tastes and some have limited tastes in music, some have a fair wide ranging taste in music, some can have tastes in music that cover all genres of music.

I really love OASIS, my favourite group, but I have friends who can't stand them.

I think there is no shame in being honest and criticising the piles and piles of crap out there (that would be... most popular music), but it's also good manners not to insult people's taste in music either as it's a very personal thing for a lot of people.

It's okay to like cheap, disposable pop in a sort of trivial manner. That's cool. What's NOT cool is actually following it obsessively, giving it merit that doesn't exist and automatically eating up every type of that crap that comes your way. Some people follow JUST pop and get way too into idolizing mundane, talentless personalities.

Most people on here like random bands like those emo/scene/goth whatever the ****** they are that perform at random festivals for free.

I'm proud to say I like bands that actually have a few good albums.
What the **** are you talking about? How exactly does a festival or band become 'random'? When you have zero knowledge of it? Bands are payed rich sums of money to play festivals, except in special cases.

Idiot.

saying that music taste is a matter of a opinion is all fine and well but ultimately...you know what's up. I think I have a healthy balance of being able to appreciate a catchy song without necessarily justifying the singer as a credible artist. For example, I think TiK ToK is a fantastically catchy pop song, but I couldn't even begin to try and defend Ke$ha as a credible artist. But I'm still gonna listen to TiK ToK.

I do however think that there is a general lack of appreciation for GOOD pop music these days, some people just write off pop as a genre because it's 'mainstream' and assume it's meaningless tripe. But if they took the time too look, as one needs to do in ANY genre, there is actually some high quality pop music still being made.

I appreciate musical taste differs from one to another, but it feels like most people love all this manufactured bands.

My taste differs to what mood I'm in.

From Pink Floyd to the Beatles.
From David Bowie to T-Rex.
From Gary Numan to Malcolm McLaren.
From Kate Bush to Suzanne Vega.
From Japan To Echo & The Bunnymen.
From Visage to Adam & The Ants.
From The Alarm to The Damned
From Meat Loaf to Queen
From Toyah to Blondie.
From Depeche Mode to Yazoo.
From Tears For Fears to Marillion.
From Oasis to Pulp.
From Mamas & The Papas to Fleetwood Mac
From Milltown Brothers to James.
From Eminem to Dr Dre.
From OMD to La Roux.
From The Killers to Green Day.
From Hurts to The Script.

I could go on..............

Actually in some circumstances, hooks can make a song even more annoying, especially if it's in a major key. (Cheryl Cole - "Fight for the Love", The Feeling - "Show Some Love")

Madonna never fails to deliver on catchy tunes, credit where it's due, but I still can't stand her music which is artificial, unimaginative and totally lacking in personality.

As I say, my musical snobbery mostly stops when it comes to actual people and their personal tastes. As much as I get some laughs out of MM&I's posts, I respect the fact that s/he is not afraid to admit what they like. Admitting to listening to Madonna by the same token takes a certain honesty and lack of vanity and I don't doubt most people listen to what they do because they enjoy it.

Heh.

'Naming obscure genres makes me knowledgable'. It doesn't work like that. Especially when so many of those subgenres just fit into the greater genre of '****ty metal'. Metal fans are the only people to do this needlessly in order to sound crazy. Pop fans never saw the need to invent pointless subgenres just because an extra musical element has been added so what is such a stagnant, samey breed of noise. There's an oboe after been added on to the screams! Let's call it oboe metal!

And knowing the difference between reggae and dance doesn't make you a 'genre elitist' no more that knowing that Daft Punk is not jazz.

Although considering your unique way of looking at it I could get some freedom of thought in and just tell people I think it 'feels' like jazz.

Lol? Why do you start random arguments? When did I ever say naming "obscure" genres makes me knowledgeable? I simply put the bands I like in their proper genres. ****ty metal? I don't really core what you think of metal, you can generalise and stereotype metal fans all you want, but that's not going to change anyones opinion. How is it to sound crazy? It's just giving specific genres, because there's a wide range of metal. Screams?

You seriously are an idiot if you think metal is "screaming"
Please, don't try insult metal when you don't know what it is, you've obviously been listening to -core stuff and mistaking it for metal, therefore stereotyping all metal bands in the most stupid ways.

Heh. Way to complete loose the plot. How many assumptions did you manage to cram into that one angsty little outburst? I never said metal was just screaming. I never confused metal with 'core'. I do know what metal is - I just don't like it. Your just proving my point as I go along, really. Getting very touchy about genres yet saying you don't care about the difference between reggae and dance because your not a 'genre elitist'.

Because apparently I guess in your musical world being able to tell these two utterly distinct types of music apart results in 'elitism'?

It was a dumb, silly comment. Especially after your ultra pretentious shopping list of genres you named off to look impressive. And don't say that's not what it was done for.

That's why I took issue.

It was a dumb, silly comment. Especially after your ultra pretentious shopping list of genres you named off to look impressive. And don't say that's not what it was done for.

That's why I took issue.
Actually, I think he was quite calm and grown-up in light of your previous post. You are very rude.

You say I'm assuming things, yet you just generalised every single metal fan and band in the world. That's hypocriticism at its peak.

You did confuse metal with core. You said it's just screaming. Metal is not screaming. -Core genres are screaming. Therefore you hate -core genres, and not actual metal, I doubt you've even heard any metal bands.

I wasn't getting touchy about anything, I just said I felt it had a reggae touch to it, I wasn't going ballistic like you are with the metal genres. You are the one who seems to be going mad because I mixed up two different genres.

No, your reply was. You don't know anything about metal, yet you call it "screaming" and "noise". You have a close mind. You don't even know me in real life, yet you accuse me of listening the genres to make myself look impressive.

It's completely false, I just listed the musicians I like and put them in their correct genres, incase any of you like them and want to hear more music from that certain genre. Please don't make pathetic assumptions of someone you don't know, thanks.

Again no. I did not. I made an offhand comment about screming. I didn't actually say metal consisted purely of screaming. So stop saying I confused the two.
And if you can't see the inherent irony in what you done then of course you think I'm just some rude douche without a point to make. Being able to tell the difference between reggae and dance requires 'elitism'?

And stop saying I don't 'get' or 'understand' metal.

I just don't like it.

It's that simple.

Really.

Ok, here's a few lines of what you said.

"Especially when so many of those subgenres just fit into the greater genre of '****ty metal'. Metal fans are the only people to do this needlessly in order to sound crazy. Pop fans never saw the need to invent pointless subgenres just because an extra musical element has been added so what is such a stagnant, samey breed of noise. There's an oboe after been added on to the screams! Let's call it oboe metal!"

Ok, the thing is, when you say "added on to the screams", it gives me the message that you think all metal is "screaming".

1. Barely any metal is screaming.

2. Subgenres aren't made "in order to sound crazy", metal has a huge variety of instruments and types of vocals used within it.

3. Subgenres aren't "pointless", if you had an open mind, you'd understand that.

4. Metal subgenres aren't just 1 more extra musical element added to the "samey breed of noise", they are very different, once again, if you had an open mind you'd realise that.

5. You don't know what metal is, which is why you dislike it. You probably heard some core band and suddenly generalised it as if every metal band screams and has "chug chug" breakdowns and stuff.

6. Bands like Metallica have influenced a LOT of modern bands, not just metal. It's not just random noise. It's meaningful art. Songs like "Fade to Black" are a gift to the music industry.

7. It's fine that you don't like metal. I never said you should, I'm not mad at you for not liking it. It would be wrong of me to insult you because of your taste. All I'm saying is that you don't need to suddenly start random arguments because I'm an "angry teenager metulz kid" and that you hate metal, I got confused between 2 genres ok, give it a rest already.
