There is no doubt in my mind that X-Factor most definitely wants and still wants (not as much) a Katie versus Cher story to continue.
It translates into the best cash-injection of voting when dysfunctional teens have vote wars.
Maybe the problem is that they are not different enough. Their demos can't quite decide what side to fall on. Chavs = Cher versus Harry Potter/Lady Gagaites = Katie??

So as someone here mentioned - I think that big powerful voting block were probably splitting/spreading votes around.
They thought Cher might be safe enough and dumped their cash on at-risk Katie.

Katie and Cher may be vying for the same votes. Seem to mainly have the same fans in common. With one eliminated the other would probably have a clear run to the final.
