The irony. Its fine for them to burn the bible though. Is this arrest fair or silly?

Vicky.

Stupid. Absolutely ridiculous tbh :/

Double standards...as usual.

It's always hard to say what actually constitutes "inciting racial hatred", it seems to be a grey area. But does one girl burning a book on facebook really incite hatred? I wouldnt say so

I think she deserves it; it's just ignorant, rude and disrespectfull.

Niall

Silly.

They only arrested her because Muslims would be having kittens if the police hadn't done anything.

If she burned the bible nothing would have happened.

*Sigh*

BB_Eye

Silly, the police are bending over backwards not to offend the Islamic community when their precious time could be spent on more important matters.

And yes, the law banning 'incitement to religious hatred' is stupid and illiberal too and should be repealed.

Shasown
26-11-2010, 04:11 PM
Pretty stupid of her really, but hopefully something good would come out of it.

If she is prosecuted and punished it then sets a standard in law which has to be honoured. The next time radical muslims burn a copy of the Bible then the same standards have to be applied to them, if not double standards have then been shown to apply to UK law and the girl can them claim for a removal of the conviction and compensation.

Grimnir

maybe the girl read a bit about Mohammed and his little girl bride, this brought back some bad memories, so she thought

And? Two rights does not make a wrong. You seem to forget these are Muslim EXTREMISTS who have burned the bible - not normal muslims. This is some stupid teenage girl who gets what she deserves, I doubt she even understand the Muslim faith.

Pft. Religion shouldn't have carte blanche to be respected by non believers.

I myself believe in space wolves. They can't be proven to exist, but they visit me each night and tell me to dropkick people in the face and that bread is sacred and not to be heated.

Don't make toast.

Respect my beliefsz ~~~.

See how riddiculous it is?

Facts are the only thing that should be respected.

I'm pretty much the same mindset as this (but I dont believe in space wolves...worshipping moomins is more my thing :joker:). But I also think if they are going to punish one, they should punish others for the same thing, otherwise its not really very fair and is prejudice in a way :/

And what if I find some of the beliefs outlined in the Koran 'rude' ... to put it lightly?

I'm sure I'm going to be burning myself in hell for an eternity. Are you telling me I can't burn a book for five minutes?

I guess you could burn a book for five minutes, if you were to feel thats the best way you could express your views... however, I also think it's common courtesy and respect to do this in private, and not go boasting about it on facebook knowing it will hurt individuals. I also think this applies to Muslims etc. who do the same.

Thats a good point - however, the Koran is a holy book that is the backbone of many peoples lifes; people interpret it in different ways (some, in unjustifiable ways) but I don't think it is right to burn it and brag about it. Do we really need more religious hatred?

I know you could say now that I am not giving it full respect saying some interpretations are 'unjustifiable' but I think in situations like this it is good to use some common sense as to what is 'moral' as such.

Judas, the Quran is not a Holy book. Why is it Holy, just because someone says it is? It's just a fictional book, nothing else.

And as for the girl, it's a shame that her acts got her that attention, but I'm not suprised. Can't be having Muslims offended now can we!

We got a free bible each in assembly in about year 7 or 8 or something so had a bible fight in the yard (similar to a snowball fight but with bibles instead). The teachers found it funny (but still attempted to stop us and put some people in detention) but the RE teachers weren't impressed

That's one of the most ignorant posts I've seen on here, Of course intergration helps. Look at South Africa, granted it's still quite dangerous in places but it's in a much better position then it was under apartheid. That's just one example I can think of on the top of my head. Another example could be America in the 40's-60's where segregation was rife, that didn't help much either.

The Jesus story was one of many stories created to try and fulfill the Old Testament. And it was one that caught on.

Almost every facet of Jesus Christ's life is present in hundreds of other mythologies and gods that came before him. Jesus is like a 'best of' compilation.

That is not what I was originally arguing about though, arista. And that statement can never be true, there can never be a way to know 100% there is no 'superior being'. We can believe if there is or isn't - but we can never know.

Why should that be an arrestable offence? Disrespecting Christianity for one thing is great fun, as evidenced by Jerry Springer: the Opera, which also got banned thanks to complaining crybabies.

I don't know about you, but I don't like blasphemy laws.
