I hear the earthquake was 1000 times more powerful than the one which affected Christchurch. - I wonder if the two were related.
There is also a nuclear power plant on alert which could spell even more disaster. :(

how the bad could it hit the USA? I'm going there in like three weeks D:
Japanese police have now confirmed that between 200 and 300 bodies have been found on the beach near Sendai, the closest city to the epicentre. NHK television said the victims appeared to have drowned.
This is shocking.

It'll only hit the west coast. It depends on how much surge the waves have. Not all the west coast will be affected, only parts of it, depends on how the Tsunami travels.

Generally the further the tsunami travels the weaker it gets, so I wouldn't expect the consequences in the US to be too bad

Yeah, it's more low lying countries like Vanuatu that will probably get the most damage. The waves could just go right over the low-lying islands.

Japan's central island of Honshu is waking up to scenes of widespread death and devastation from a massive earthquake and tsunami that hit its Pacific coast Friday, with local media saying as many as 1,000 people may have been killed.
The 8.9 magnitude quake struck waters east of Honshu early Friday afternoon, shaking buildings in Tokyo and sending waves up to 10 meters high into coastal areas northeast of the capital. It was the most powerful earthquake on record to hit Japan and the world's fifth largest in more than a century.
Japanese officials said a power outage at a nuclear plant in the city of Fukushima shot radiation levels to 1,000 times above normal in some parts of the facility after the reactor's cooling system failed.
Japanese Prime Minster Naoto Kan ordered a widening of the evacuation zone around the plant, telling thousands of people to move at least 10 kilometers away.
Television footage showed a muddy torrent of water sweeping across farmland near the city of Sendai Friday, carrying vehicles and buildings, some of them on fire. Japanese authorities said 200 to 300 bodies have been found in Sendai, the city closest to the quake.
Japan's National Police Agency reported at least 150 other deaths from the disaster and said more than 500 people were missing.
The Japanese government said it was deploying troops and helicopters to help with rescue efforts, but damage to highways and widespread flooding was making it hard for them to reach to the worst-affected areas.
Northeast of Sendai, fires raged through the night in Kesennuma, a town of 70,000 people. A large fire also erupted at an oil refinery in Ichihara, near Tokyo. Japanese media say a ship carrying 100 people also was carried away by the tsunami.
The quake halted all train services between Tokyo and neighboring towns, leaving thousands of people stranded in the capital, unable to get home. Several airports were closed, including Tokyo's Narita.
The tsunami flooded beaches in Hawaii and damaged harbors in ((the U. S. West Coast state of)) California, while prompting evacuation alerts in several Latin American nations, including Chile. The U.S. Coast Guard was searching for a man swept out to sea off the coast of northern California.
U.S. President Barack Obama said he called Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan and pledged U.S. assistance for what he called a potentially "catastrophic" disaster in Japan, a close U.S. ally.

Explosion at one of the nuclear plants is now giving cause for concern. What was seemingly being 'contained' last night, has now resulted in one of the reactor buildings exploding this morning. Official reports state that a roof in the building collapsed. Videos of the incident show less of a collapse, but more, an explosion blowing the building apart. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is urgently seeking information about the explosion at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant.
People are being evacuated from a 60kms radius - where as last night, it was only 10km radius. BBC reporter was trying to get to the area and at 60km away, was turned away by Police and Authorities who said it was too dangerous - though officially still being quoted as 10kms exclusion zone
.
The BBC's Nick Ravenscroft was on his way towards Fukushima, but about 60km from the plant was stopped by the police and told it was too dangerous to proceed. He says there is lots of traffic coming in the other direction.
From BBC Live news: Japan's NHK TV says officials measured the level of radiation at the entrance of the Fukushima-Daiichi plant at 1529 Japanese time. If people are exposed to this level of radiation for an hour they'd receive the same amount of radiation they normally would in a year, the report says.
Stuff made from nightmares.

Broke my heart watching that clip of the boat being caught up in the vortex......... stomach churning, horrible. Impending doom.
I'm not liking the sounding of the problems at this nuclear plant at all.
0927: Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency is investigating the explosion at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yuko Edano, has told journalists: "As to the evacuation of the residents, of course we will have to ascertain the level of the radiation and, of course, we will have to cope and take appropriate measures. But once we do the analysing and once we know the facts we will let you know."
0923: Before the explosion, the government had declared a state of emergency at five nuclear reactors after the generators pumping cooling water at the reactors failed.

Radiation leakage has also been confirmed.

good morning to you Happy!
In the tsunami in 2004, I had friends holidaying who lost some of their relatives in Thailand. 3 years later, I visited on of the areas in Phuket, place called Kamala Beach - tiny little place - and 3 years on, they were still recovering - and were just finishing rebuilding the local primary school - which was literally 300 mtrs away from the beachfront.
There were still heaps of debris lying around - as well as the strange mixture of buildings not affected - it really was a weird experience. Little place called the Papa Crab hotel that I stayed in had just managed to get itself fully rebuilt and operational again ...... as I say, that was a few years later. :(
Latest from the BBC
0957: From Richard Black, BBC environment correspondent: "Although Japan has a long and largely successful nuclear power programme, officials have been less than honest about some incidents in the past, meaning that official re-assurances are unlikely to convince everyone this time round."
0948: Hirofumi Yokoyama, an official at Japan's Meteorological Agency, says people living along the Pacific Coast should remain on alert: "The possibility of tsunami with a height of 10m or higher is getting slimmer but we're still calling on people living along the coast of Tohoku region to be cautious because tsunami as high as three metres or more could still hit the area."

Not sure... I've looked at the Sky news website and it's reporting much on the situ at the fear of a meltdown - but reports seem to be contradictory...
on the bbc website: a chap has reported that he thinks this is similar to Chernobyl, then a short while later, his story changes to it possibly not being that bad unless there is fire or further explosion giving rise to any radiation leaks being exposed to the air and thus having the potential to be airborne and spread...... seems it may all just be speculation at this point.
Mind you, I remember Chernobyl and watching all that unfold.

1023: Japanese authorities are extending the evacuation zone around the two Fukushima nuclear plants from 10km to 20km, according to local media.
Yet a BBC reporter trying to get closer - was turned away by Police via roadblocks.... 60kms from the plant.
So the Japanese authorities are saying one thing, but a reporter on the ground and reporting - cannot get more than 60kms before finding roads are closed off and patrolled by police.
I don't like the sound of this, the Japanese authorities seem to be playing this down........................ hopefully with good intent if they are working to actual information known..... but they've not been the most truthful in the past. Time will tell. They are saying it's a steam explosion (good thing) and nothing to do with the core of the reactor (bad). fingers crossed.

Exactly what I was thinking when I justheard of the reporter being turned back at 60kms.
What I don't like the sound of : if it's not a threat -why are the Japanese authorities extending their 'official' evacuation zone from 10 to 20kms. (never mind the fact a reporter is turned back at 60kms).
Why extend - it's either safe or not. It's alright saying it's a precautionary measure, but if there is no immediate danger or concern - why this need to widening the evacuation zone at this stage.
I think there's more to this than what we are being told. This particular reactor is an old one, built in 1971 I believe - the 2 generators that were in place to cool down the reactor in such an emergency didn't kick in.......... there is a certain amount of residual dead heat still being generated which will by the hours that pass, cool down naturally. That's on the premise that no further aftershocks (that are expected) happen.
I'm not convinced. Not at all. Why? The Japansese initially said it was not an explosion, but that the roof collapsed. then they admitted it was an explosion......... I understand they don't want to create unneeded panic, but lying right from the start, is going to have an adverse effect - and no one will trust official reports. Especially when you have people on the ground who are giving info completely contradictory to official reports.
added:- just saw this on the BBC website
1052: Neil McKeown in Nakameguro, Tokyo writes: "The evacuation zone has been extended to 20km by the government. However TepCo [the Tokyo Electric Power Company] appeared in a news conference and promised to release new radioactivity readings after 6pm. It is now 7.30pm and they have not done so. People are getting extremely frustrated at the lack of news coming from TepCo and the government - they have yet to confirm if the building that suffered an explosion housed a reactor, and we have no indication how much radiation has been released or in what direction winds are blowing

1110: An attempt to explain the risk to the Fukushima nuclear plants following the earthquake: The plants are designed to shut down automatically, which halts the main nuclear fission reaction, but there is a residual amount of intense heat within the system. Back-up generators should kick in to power the cooling mechanisms needed to dissipate that heat - but if they fail, as appears to have happened here, temperatures rise. If this isn't stopped, the reactor vessel itself could eventually melt and leak.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano has confirmed the explosion at Fukushima-Daiichi. "We are looking into the cause and the situation and we'll make that public when we have further information," From Reuters.
Radiation leakage has also been confirmed.
Now in the 'cold light of day' we can see not only the destruction, but of the complete devastation, the size of area affected, people stranded, infastructure totally wiped out - no access to really get to those poor stranded beleagured souls. It's simply horrible. This is terrible. I didn't expect things to get this bad. What on Earth were they thinking building a nuclear fission reactor on such a tumultuous part of the world anyway?

Not just 1, but 5! All 5 are on emergency alert and there are 11 reactors in total. It's scary stuff

Seems the info now is that it shouldn't be 'too bad' and fears are dissipating that reactor could go into meltdown.
Seems at odds with what was reported earlier in respect of radiation levels - being in the area for one hour would equate to being exposed to radiation for one year.
Story has gone from roof collapse with no confirmation of building housing a reactor - to confirming it was an explosion in a building that did indeed house a reactor but allegedly, the containers protecting (encasing) the rods are secure, and it's residual dead heat that will naturally cool down.
Just heard that radioactive leakage is not at 'dangerous' levels.

Mmmmmm..... thought the levels of radiation were very low and not dangerous. Precaution or not - this would seem unnecessay if the truth is as they say, no leaks to cause concern. If that be true, if they are so sure, why the precautionary measures so quickly in place... unless they are expecting problems.

wow, just saw the explosion... wasn't as bad as I immediately thought when you're prone to think "nuclear explosion" and at least they'd evacuated nearby :/The core is still stable. The explosion from the reactor was a hydrogen explosion due to low water levels. But there was a radiation leak.
If they are unable to prevent a core meltdown, it wouldn't materialise as a nuclear explosion, but we would most definitely know about it. Unbelievable levels of radiation could get released into the atmosphere. About 32 years ago, the Three Mile Island accident (a partial meltdown) came dangerously close to this. This guy eloquently explains what might have happened.

Any radiation can be dangerous.
Its always better to have specialist assistance close at hand until all potential for danger has passed.
The reactor and its core may still be intact, but because it wasnt cooled quickly enough at the original incident it may be "hot".
The reactor could be ruptured but safety measures have dealt or are containing the problem. In which case repair teams may have to go in and work on it. In which case International regualtions require special medical teams to be on hand.
The extension of the safety area could simply have been following written guidelines for this sort of incident. In the event of a possible breach of the reactor they need to evacuate a minimum distance arond the plant.
However there will be different safety areas depending on the type of breach, actual, suspected type of contaminant released etc. If the wind speed picks up the safety area is automatically increased. Its dependant on how far particles will travel driven by the wind.
Its always safer to evacuate further consequently they may have initially decided on imposing the minimum required distance which is set to affect the minimum area while providing the maximum safety.
The safety distance will also take in minimum disruption to the local populace, autorities may have decided given the circumstances and current disruption to increase it.

What I find interesting is the way in which such natural disasters can be used to validate the beliefs of totally opposed factions. For example in the bible's Book of Revelations it states that towards the end of the world, there will be an increase in the scale and severity of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tidal waves, volcanoes etc., so religious folk can point to these incidents as "proof" that the prophecies are coming true. On the other hand we have the environmentalists telling us that these disasters are manmade and a result of global warming, environmental damage etc.
Whatever the reason, these disasters do seem to be becoming more and more frequent, and damage done to life and property seems ever more catastrophic and immense. It does sometimes seem that Mankind is being harshly "punished". It makes you realise that despite all our marvellous technological advances we are still at the complete mercy of Nature.

1012pm. Some clarification: It is the number three reactor at the Fukushima No. 1 plant where officials have just announced that the cooling system has failed.
This morning's blast took place at the number one reactor at the same plant. "All the functions to keep cooling water levels in No. 3 reactor have failed at the Fukushima No. 1 plant," a spokesman for the operator said.
Doesn't sound like it's panning out as well as they had hoped.
Reuters: The number of people exposed to radiation near Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant could reach 160, an official from the Japan Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency has said. Nine people have shown signs of possible exposure
The blast this morning was from Number 1 reactor at the same plant... this number 3 reactor is now causing problems.

Radiation levels in the air have risen 4 fold since that last explosion
How far will the radiation be able to travel in the atmosphere? What other countries could it affect?

There were 2 more quakes earlier a 5.8 aftershock & 6.1 quake along nearby/different fault line.
The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.1 and said it had been preceded a few minutes earlier by another 5.8-magnitude tremor. The epicentre of that aftershock was located 315km north-east of Tokyo. -- AFP
