EastEnders: why is Ian so wasted?

He's really good! Bryan Kirkwood isn't giving attention to the only remaining original character in the soap. His characterization is extremely poor, as well. After all that happened with Cindy, Mel and Laura, I find it really hard to believe that he would even dare cheat on Jane, the first woman who actually showed him love, with Glenda! It wouldn't happen.
