I'm obsessed with this series, I got the last two books yesterday and I read Catching Fire in two sittings. I'll start and finish the last book tomorrow I think.

For people who have never read or heard of it before it's set in the future in a country called Panem which is essentially a future America. Panem's run by the Capitol which is this luxurious city that lords it over the twelve districts which is where the lower class citizens live and work. After a failed rebellion the Capital creates the Hunger Games as which involves taking two kids from each district and pitting them against each other in a battle to the death in an ever changing booby trapped arena. The main character is a girl called Katniss Everdeen who volunteers for the games in place of her younger sister who was originally picked. It's quite similar to Battle Royale but with a very interesting Reality TV twist.

I can't recommend it enough, I think it's a brilliant series.

Yeah it's being released next year, I'm cautiously optimistic about it.

The Hunger Games > Mockingjay > Catching Fire

I think it had no other choice but to end flatly to keep it true to itself. An up lifting ending would have ruined the whole point of the story imo

Tom4784
31-12-2011, 02:28 PM
Mockingjay has it's moments but i think it's the worst one in the series, It's still good don't get me wrong but I think parts of it were very lazily written.

Like how every few chapters Katniss would black out or suffer an injury so that the author could explain away large chunks of the story. Plus the whole Peeta issue never really went anywhere, one chapter he wanted to kill her and in the next he was back in love with her again. It felt like an unneccesary obstacle just to spice things up really.

Smithy
31-12-2011, 02:51 PM
Yeah, I kinda agree with the latter point, it did seem kinda pointless

omg and whenPrim died, she may as well have not volunteered for the games :joker:

Niamh.
31-12-2011, 08:18 PM
Yeah, I agree with both of those points

That Peeta bit was a bit strange and not properly explained at all. And Prim dying was so sudden and quick :/

-might as well post what i posted on tumblr-

I’ve only read 5 chapters so far and I’m aware that none of the action has happened yet, but…

the writing’s a bit simplistic. Is this aimed at young teenagers or something? Because without wanting to sound like a literary snob (and God knows, as an eng.lit. student I’m entitled to be) there’s a very fine line between short, sharp sentences and a glaring lack of vocabulary. I understand that a lot of the time this is just a narrative device to make the main girl all angsty and uncommunicative, but for a long time I was left with little impression of what District 12 was like.

eh, maybe I’m judging too soon. Maybe my inner Battle Royale fan isn’t even giving it a chance.

Lee.
28-01-2012, 10:30 AM
Shaun, I agree with you. I bought the books thinking they were adult fiction, bit on reading them, I reckon they are aimed at teenagers/young adults. My mum and I were just discussing this yesterday funnily enough.

However, its easy reading and a good story... I just hope they don't aim the film at kids and hope they give it at least a 15 rating.

I think the death of Foxface was too rushed. She wouldn't have been that stupid. No way. I'd also have liked the whole mutts-tributes thing explained - why Katniss thought she saw the dead's eyes and features.

But the thing that most annoyed me is how attached to Gale she is :bored: she didn't appear to have any idea of romance prior to going into the games and it just left her coming across as cold and calculating, which, whilst in those circumstances helped them survive, seems a bit of a major character flaw.

The capitol engineered the "mutts" to mess with the tributes heads basically. She wasn't just seeing things.

What Jessica said for the Mutts. I don't think Fox face was being stupid, she'd been stealing their food all along, she knew katniss knew her plants so why would she doubt her?

Also, I don't think it's a character flaw in Katniss. She is quite cold and I don't think she really thought about romance in general until this thing with Peta happened which in turn made her think about Gale in that way

im only 250 pages into the book but you can tell they have cut things out of the book for the film

like how she just grabs the backpack and runs, in the book she ends up wrestling some guy who then vomits blood all over face because hes had a knife launched into his back

they better not cut all the gory stuff out :nono: i looking forward to seeing the tracker jacker stuff

Fortunately for the younger fans, director Gary Ross has confirmed that it will be a PG-13, to accommodate the younger fans of the book. Gary explained, “It’s not going to be an R-rated movie because I want the 12 and 13 and 14-year-old-fans to be able to go see it.”

They could still make it brutal without needing to resort to buckets of blood. I reckon most of the violent scenes will be kept but they'll just be more creative in how they present it.

Sounds and implied violence can be just as effective as showing the gore in all it's glory.

Yeah, Peta especially was spot on for me, I did have a picture of Saoirse Ronan in my head for Katniss but Jennifer lawerence is good too.

And yeah, me too, although something I wouldn't mind them changing is :

Seeing it from other peoples perspectives not just Katniss', that way they could add in bits that we didn't see in the book, like them rescuing Peta and what actually happened to him while he was kept a prisoner and stuff

From what I've heard they've stuck to the books quite religiously.

I hope they have. I don't want it to turn out the way the Twilight series did. The books (in my opinion at least) were pretty damn good, but then Summit got their hands on them and messed around with the plot lines and characters. :bored:

Same. They've gotten everything perfect so far. And from what I saw of the Capitol in the trailer, that was spot on too.

The only thing that didn't match my imagination was the snippet of District 12 they showed. I imagined it to be a lot more dreary, and nowhere near as green and lush as it was.

I know what you mean but...:

... unless they talk to Suzanne Collins about what to add in and how to do the scenes it'd probably go really wrong.

I like the mystery of what Peeta was doing too. I think it would help to endear the audience towards him.

Catching Fire & THG are equally amazing so far omg.

The whole cleverness of the arena and how it's built in Catching Fire is such a good plot twist. I'm about 3/4 through Catching Fire and I love it sfm.

Oh I'm quite far actually. I haven't read as much in the past couple days as I'd have liked (family were here ugh ugh) but I've still read a fair bit:

I'm at the bit where Katniss realises the arena is a clock and is making everyone move. They were just heading to the cornucopia and Katniss was thinking about killing everyone and that she'd have to draw Finnick into a battle to get rid of him and stuffs.

Haymitch has turned into a bitch :hmph:
Coin is fierce, though. And the bit with Octavia at the dinner table with the little girl (Posy?) complimenting her appearance

Nothing's really happened. So Peeta's alive but crazy. Johanna's afraid of water. Delly is qt. Gale's being a mess.

I'm struggling to like any of the characters in this book  I have to think of someone kinda obscure, like Boggs, to find someone I like. And he'll probably die anyway.

Sad about Portia + her team though :( and how quickly they just got rid of one of the Leeg girls.

I've just finished the book.

I want to kill myself.

I've actually been sobbing LOL. I'm not sure what it is... the acknowledgment at the end to her late father... he has the same name as mine LOL so that didn't really help.

But I agree with Dean. There was just absolutely nothing happy about the ending. The fact she has children, maybe. That she ended up with Peeta, sure. But being cut off from her mother, losing Prim, and the saddest part was when she burst into tears as Buttercup came back.

I'm so glad she killed Coin... but I'm not sure why she'd have agreed to a new Hunger Games just before it. Maybe to throw Coin off, make her think they're on the same side...

But I can't even begin with the list of the dead. Everything seemed so senseless, like Messala's and Castor's... and Finnick's :bawling:
I actually misread Prim's death at first. All I saw was Effie's name and assumed it was her. I'm glad Effie and the prep team survived. They're fierce <3
omg and Tigris, what a fierce bitch <3

but yeah. I was gonna have Uni this morning. **** that.

I finished these last night. (The following contains spoilers)

I loved the end. At one stage I thought it was heading towards some unbelievable standoff between Katniss & Snow. I couldn't see a way for her to break into his building to try and assassinate him. And I was a bit disappointed when it tuned out he was accepting refugees into his compound. It seem too convenient to me. But that being a ploy so he could get kids as a human shield, I thought that was clever, very Snow-like.

Another part I loved about the finale was when she was hanging onto pavement or road and below her were creatures killing all who fell. When she called for help, I was dreading that Gale or Peeta would come to her rescue. But like a true hero she saved herself.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters

coin was worse than show imo :hmph:

atleast snow didnt hide the fact that he was a cold blooded killer

and when she suggested one final hunger games with all the capitol kids i was like OH HELL NO SHE DID NOT

Yep I agree, and I was surprised how many of the remaining victors would have been happy with them being held.

And I think Johanna was one of my fave characters, I'd love if there was a follow up book about what happens to her.

Also Gale turned out to be very cold hearted, being happy to murder loads in that mountains base, and the way he spoke about Katniss to Peeta.

johanna was one of my favs too

the bit where she wouldnt go out in the rain in mj was really really sad and even after everything the capitol did she still wanted to go

and yes gale was a prick he indirectly killed prim and didnt even apologize about it :hmph:

idk if i want anymore books tbh everything was resolved nicely for me :suspect:

Yep Johanna was more fierce in cf  Also when she was refused permission to go on the mission to the Capitol in the last book, in a way I was delighted as I was sure she'd survive.

And maybe in a year or two I'd like another book, not about the hunger games, but just what happens to Johanna next :D but yea I agree, the story did come to a great ending.

yep :(

I don't know how a writer can do that, and when Buttercup showed up, and they both mourned her, and then she rang her mom. It was devastating. Also I was pretty sad when Finnick died.

I know it was so shocking, I wasn't really too upset about Finnick's death, it just happened so fast, same as everyone else in her party, I just felt bad for annie :(

Yea I didn't care about him too much until Annie, he was all she had.

But yea after Rue was murdered, I knew Suzanne Collins was heartless. So in a way I was expecting the likes of Katniss's mom & Prim to die, also I was sure someone would die out of Katniss, Peeta & Gale (so I was happily surprised that I was wrong)

After dwelling on it for a while now I think Mockingjay was really lazily written. The ending was far too rushed and convenient and I think took the book's message in completely the wrong direction. The first two books seemed to build up Katniss as a rebel figure and a revolutionary, and then to use her as a pawn and make Gale suddenly turn all evil was just really rushed and lazy. She went from being lifelong childhood friends (and perhaps lovers) with him to "OH I KILLED YOUR SISTER? NVM IT WAS WORTH IT".

I appreciate it ended dramatically and emotionally but what kind of message does that leave children reading it? Fight totalitarianism and then fail and have everyone die and your friends turn against you and even the resistance are bad and you'll have a mangy cat and some brainwashed baker to live in a bombed city for the rest of your life.

I disagree. It sends the message that war is brutal, it destroys lives and changes people. That's a truthful message rather than a glossy Hollywood one. It's not a childrens book so I don't see why she should have been sending children any message in it.

You're confusing me for saying it's propaganda when it's pretty much common knowledge that all books should have a message. They're clearly politically motivated, so why shouldn't there be one? And I understand that war is brutal and everything but she had her lifelong friend (and implied romantic interest) turn against her so suddenly and it made no sense that he'd do it without a second thought.

Maybe the incident with Gale was her trying to highlight how war changes people.

I never said that it shouldn't have a message, I said that the message shouldn't necessarily be one that's acceptable for kids, as it's not a kids book. I don't think Gale turned against her, he just changed due to the war and the things he had to do which I think is a pretty realistic idea.
