'Coronation Street' bosses have reportedly planned a shocking new storyline for Carla Connor.
According to The Sun, the character - played by Alison King - tries to kill herself after she is brutally attacked by fiancé Frank Foster (Andrew Lancel).
He discovers her feelings for Peter Barlow (Chris Gascoyne) and rapes Carla in a jealous rage. When Peter then rejects her again, Carla is so devastated she takes an overdose of red wine and sleeping pills.
After swallowing the lethal mixture, Carla phones Peter to tell him what she’s done, before losing consciousness. Feeling guilty, anxious Peter then phones for an ambulance and she is rushed to hospital.
A source told the newspaper: "Carla is at rock bottom. She prides herself on being invincible and feels utterly broken by Frank's actions. Peter is the only friend she has left and she's never felt rejection like it. She wants to end it all."
The insider also said the soap was anxious to handle the issues “as sensitively and as realistically as possible” and worked closely with the relevant charities and support groups.
The hard-hitting scenes will air this September and are apparently being filmed this week.
It’s the latest in a succession of dark storylines on The Street. Viewers have recently seen John Stape go from school-teacher to serial killer, with Fiz being then arrested for his murders.
Star Ben Price, who plays Nick Tilsley, defended the show’s grittier plots, telling Bang Showbiz: “The viewing figures are actually up and the audience clearly like these shocking storylines, as they're watching them. That's what matters."
