View Full Version : Could Ch5 Pull the Plug Halfway Through?

I'm wondering if Channel 5 has the ability to actually just stop filming and end Big Brother halfway if they saw that it was pointless to continue for whatever reason (such as ratings). I'm sure its in the contract with Endemol and also in all the housemates contracts that the program can be ended without a winner at any time.

Channel 5 are not going to continue forking out huge amounts of money for 24 hour filming whilst getting very little revenue from voting and also from advertisers who not want to pay big bucks for the time slot.

I don't think so, C5 paid 2M for the 2 year contract, I think they will give up on this one if the ratings carry on to drop, And not put any effort into time slots, and the rest of the show, and then for CBB9 and BB13 try and make a massive come back

They can't do that?

Even if they have the rights for two years nothing says they have to use it to actually produce a show.

They can't do that?

Most game shows have clauses that means they can do what they like including ending the show mid way. Other shows have been axed halfway in the past.

Your also typically find it in the terms and conditions for competitions where they can change or cancel the offer at any time.

Its up to Channel 5 to decide what they transmit, progamming schedules etc. So yes they could drop a series halfway through.

Is it likely they will do that? Probably not, given it is pulling in larger viewing numbers than they normally get and the amount of money invested in securing the BB series.

If viewing figures drop further they may consider changing scheduling allocations or even introducing extra shows, live feed etc.

Depends on their contracts. If there is a clause which stipulates they can, well then of course they can but I'm sure that might be just as costly as well, who knows. But I don't think so, at least I'm hoping they'll ride it out.

BB10 was nearly pulled so unless ratings and other issues are sorted out asap they could easily pull a stunt of sorts to take it of air

200 million? That's ridiculous.

Is that not more than what channel 4 paid for the 5 year deal BB7-11?

Fancy agreeing to pay that much for a show that is quite clearly in its very final years. I bet they regret bumping the prize to £500,000. What a waste of money.

I'm sure I've heard Brian say a couple of times that the prize money is £100,000

I think they should, they are really killing the shows legacy

It's still excellent ratings for c5 why would they axe it?

Yes - when the sponsors/advertisers drop out, leaving C5 with costs but no revenue .....

Theoretically yes, likely no. However if in advertisers contracts there has to be a minimum number of viewers and that minimum is broken then advertisers could pull out and without advertisers there is no point.

This is Channel 5. They never expected massive ratings, they're doing just fine.

The obsessing over "negatives" which aren't really there bemuses me. Some "fans".

When you look at the "feverish" activity on TiBB it could well be sooner rather than later!

Thats true but there could be other reasons why people arent using TiBB rather than just because of of lack of interest in BB.

I think it all comes down to the core- Crap age group of HMs and no LF. Simple.

There is word that it was actually OVER 2 Years, heard that alot recently on other sites, shows, radio stations etc

And to the OP, do not be silly - this is still a hit for 5.
They will carry on and bring in LF next year.

I am sure there is a legal obligation for C5 to show it - but it may be that they put it on at 4am Wednesday;)

I don't think so, they must have a contract saying they need to let it go the full distance

Not necessarily, there was an endemol show in France called "carré VIP" (vip area) "sort of reality star vs regular people BB" got terrible rating got canceled and was replaced with CSI.

Channel 5 must have a back up plan for any bad situation they encounter.
