View Full Version : Fuel panic may be good, said PM
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2123401/Plenty-space-jerry-Mr-Maude-Minister-sparked-fuel-panic-puts-1-5m-mansion-market--Katie-Price-HAS-moved-door.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
David Cameron told shocked Ministers ‘a bit of petrol panic may be no bad thing’ as he set out his determination to defeat the threatened strike by fuel-tanker drivers.
According to senior sources, his provocative remark was made at the end of a Cabinet meeting last Tuesday that was dominated by the dispute.
Mr Cameron told Ministers that he refused to be ‘held to ransom’ by Unite, the union leading the strike call.
In a powerful rallying cry to Ministers, Mr Cameron said it was vital to build up the nation’s ‘resilience’ to a walkout by tanker drivers. Measures included training more Army drivers to replace tanker drivers and finding other ways of keeping petrol stations open.
It was after hearing Mr Cameron’s powerful intervention that Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude, one of his closest allies who is tasked with leading the contingency plans, issued his notorious call to the public to fill jerry cans with petrol as well as topping up their cars.
So ..... it's Cameron's ego at odds with the 'lower orders' - very Edwardian ..... :idc:

Governments are in a difficult situation when things like this occur, even 7 days notice didn't leave much time for people to have enough fuel they may need, David Cameron didn't know for sure that there would not be a strike before Easter or around Easter.
Francis Maude was the one who made the jerry can error.
Governments are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I don't blame David Cameron for this panic, he always said in every speech I have seen him make on this, just add that bit extra to your tanks,he never said rush out and clean the garages out.
There seems to be a lot of press criticising David Cameron for this that and the other lately, he has I think bad judgement but the Daily Mail, come on, it has to be on a par with the Sun for printing nonsense and near fiction.

So what's a "bit extra" ? A litre, 2 litres, 5, 10 ?
How very patronising of him, considering he leaves the purchase of petrol for his fleet of armour-plated Jaguars to his minions .....

Well a bit extra doesn't mean filling your tanks and more, much depends on the vehicle and what mileage you get. but to have put perhaps another 4 to 6 litres may have likely helped to get people though until the Government had its own prepared plans up and running to ensure garages got supplies in the event of a strike,
The PM was likely only meaning put a bit more fuel in your tank to see you through few days in the event of a strike, not plan for months without being able to get any fuel
I know its easy to knock PMs and Gordon Brown was also often hammered for things not always his fault but if the PM had said nothing and a strike had occurred, he would certainly now be getting hammered left, right and centre for not giving some guidance on the matter.

You gotta laugh at the Tory bashers,IF David cameron had said nothing and there was a strike and people had none they'de be blaming him for not warning them and while we are on the subject are you reading the news on Milliband? I guess not,or maybe it's not believable when it's him, lol.

There should be some 'green' icons for some posts, lol, they are not HIS cars, and they are only armour plated due to the several nutters about.unfortunately it is necessary.

But he doesn't have to worry about petrol or other trivialities, right ?

"4 to 6 litres" wouldn't last most commuters more than a couple of days and a business no more than an hour or two ..... ;)

He has many more things to worry about than we dont! example being that people aren't as sensible as he thought, when he tells them to add a little extra, the silly public go into panic mode and drain the pumps, good grief what is it that people dont understand about 'adding a little extra' maybe he should throw a sickie and go relax and watch a sports function!!!!

Exactly, that is what the PM meant, just top up enough to get you through the first days of any strike until the plans he had ready to use were actioned and supplies were going back to the garages, you have actually just made the PMs point.
Businesses would have got through with care longer than a few hours, the PM wants business to thrive not be hampered.

No bad thing eh?....give the gullible public something else to rant about. Cash for access...oh thats old news...

One day its 'no bad thing' and the next 'it must be avoided at all costs'...make your mind up dave!
This whole thing has been a mess, so many people wasting hours and hours trying to get petrol, for them not to strike.

Cameron certainly "has many more things to worry about" than the rest of us, including how to bash the "lower orders" while he sucks up to his billionaire paymasters ..... ;)
A "little extra" for Cameron means giving £40k per £1m cashback to his banking and commercial cronies ..... :idc:
Of course, the Tories robbed the pensioners of their "little extra" .....
