Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, former Oasis man Liam Gallagher, Morrissey and John Lennon are among those who've made the last eight in NME's search for the Ultimate Musical Icon of the last 60 years.
As well as the above, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain have also made the cut, which began earlier this year with a shortlist of 60 people.
To celebrate NME's 60th birthday, we're going to be crowning the ultimate musical icon from the magazine's lifetime and the current shortlist of eight will be narrowed down to four in the coming weeks.
To find out more about the search for NME's Ultimate Musical Icon of the last 60 years and to see who The Cribs, The Maccabees, Grimes, Howler, Richard Hawley, Wretch 32, Santigold and the Mystery Jets name as their ultimate icon, pick up the new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now or available digitally. There's also posters of the likes of Bowie, Gallagher, Cobain and Winehouse, with more to come in the following week's issue.
The shortlist for the NME's Ultimate Icon of the last 60 years is as follows:
Alex Turner
Amy Winehouse
David Bowie
Jimi Hendrix
John Lennon
Kurt Cobain
Liam Gallagher
Morrissey

Now I love Alex/the Monkeys, but in no way should he be on that list, not sure Amy should either

I think Alex is actually quite good as both a lyricist and song writer. Although Amy Winehouse's musical life did not span a many number of years, it was a very memorable one, and it will continue to reach and inspire further generations, I am sure. And I have to say also that Noel has had far more musical and artistic input into Oasis than Liam ever had, and any subsequent offshoots. I would rather see Noel than Liam on there.
Wheres Britney? :suspect:

I think Noel probably should be on that list over Liam, but Liam was pretty iconic when Oasis were massive. No way Amy should be there, everyone only suddenly remembered her again when she died. Alex shouldn't be there, he has next to no charisma as a frontman. The rest are all good.

Icon, diva and legend are words that are used far too freely nowadays ..... :hmph:

Anthony Kiedis should be on there tbh, the chili peppers have been going for nearly 30 years and he's one of the most charismatic front men of all time

let's all just agree that Amy Winehouse is amazing and probably one of the greatest 21st century music icons, but is nowhere near the top 8 of the past 60 years

I would have liked to have seen Debbie Harry in there but, hey, it's a public vote.
Have your say over the final 8 (http://www.nme.com/ultimateicon)

three guesses who I voted for
would like to see Lennon or Hendrix win too. Morrissey would be good if he wasn't such a dick nowadays. Cobain's a touch overrated, but more deserving than the other 3

Kurt is not over rated :nono: his longevity was short but he revolutionised an era. His music was something new and original and something that was never heard before and hasn't been heard since.
I would agree David Bowie should be there, probably Elton John as well tbf

My top 8 would be Bowie, Lennon, Hendrix, Dylan, Elvis, MJ, Madonna (not my favourite, or anywhere near my favourite 8 acts ever, but easily one of the most iconic) and hmm... Marley maybe.
people were still talking about her a lot
But wasn't it all for the wrong reasons, i.e. substance abuse and mental health issues?

oh...maybe Freddie Mercury actually.

Not at all. That was the way the media reported because they had to have a story on her. She was in the papers every day. She could not even leave her home for a scrum of photographers and they followed her everywhere. People could not ignore the train wreck that was Amy Winehouse, but for me, she had a beautiful voice, and made some fantastic songs, and that is what will be remembered more about her for some people.

Would be funny if Morrissey won, though:
Morrissey's libel case against the NME is headed to court this summer. According to the Morrissey fanzine True to You, the case is set for July 16-19. Fans hoping to show support for Morrissey are encouraged to "make their presence known outside the High Court in London on these dates." Morrissey's tour dates in Athens and Istanbul on July 16 and 19 will not be cancelled.
Morrissey is suing the NME over an interview published November 28, 2007 that the singer claims was defamatory and portrayed him as racist. He claims the magazine doctored his words significantly and fabricated material. True to You notes that the magazine proposed a formal apology on its website (and not in print), but that Morrissey rejected the offer "as disproportionate to the damage done to Morrissey by the NME magazine itself."

Ok, everyone suddently remembered her music again when she died. Before that she was just in the tabloids with the odd speculation of new material now and then.
