Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, former Oasis man Liam Gallagher, Morrissey and John Lennon are among those who've made the last eight in NME's search for the Ultimate Musical Icon of the last 60 years.

As well as the above, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain have also made the cut, which began earlier this year with a shortlist of 60 people.

To celebrate NME's 60th birthday, we're going to be crowning the ultimate musical icon from the magazine's lifetime and the current shortlist of eight will be narrowed down to four in the coming weeks.

Now I love Alex/the Monkeys, but in no way should he be on that list, not sure Amy should either

I think Alex is actually quite good as both a lyricist and song writer. Although Amy Winehouse's musical life did not span a many number of years, it was a very memorable one, and it will continue to reach and inspire further generations, I am sure. And I have to say also that Noel has had far more musical and artistic input into Oasis than Liam ever had, and any subsequent offshoots. I would rather see Noel than Liam on there.

I think Noel probably should be on that list over Liam, but Liam was pretty iconic when Oasis were massive. No way Amy should be there, everyone only suddenly remembered her again when she died. Alex shouldn't be there, he has next to no charisma as a frontman. The rest are all good.

let's all just agree that Amy Winehouse is amazing and probably one of the greatest 21st century music icons, but is nowhere near the top 8 of the past 60 years

Kurt is not over rated his longevity was short but he revolutionised an era. His music was something new and original and something that was never heard before and hasn't been heard since.

I would agree David Bowie should be there, probably Elton John as well tbf

My top 8 would be Bowie, Lennon, Hendrix, Dylan, Elvis, MJ, Madonna (not my favourite, or anywhere near my favourite 8 acts ever, but easily one of the most iconic) and hmm... Marley maybe.
