Gary Barlow has criticised Nicole Scherzinger's decision to take Rylan Clark through to the live stages of The X Factor.

Speaking on an episode of The Jonathan Ross Show that is scheduled to air tonight, Barlow made it clear that he would not have had Clark in his final three.

"Come on Nicole, you've got ears," said the Take That star as they discussed the Essex-born contestant.

"His voice has grown and he's not a big ballad singer," replied Scherzinger, defending her act. "He's a great performer."

Clark joins James Arthur and Jahmene Douglas in the Boys category, mentored by Scherzinger. The eccentric singer was overcome with emotion upon being told he had made it through to the Live Shows, and clips of his over the top reaction have become popular online.

He added: "Not everybody is going to love you, but that's okay. You are never going to please everybody."

Barlow also told Ross that despite minor disagreements over acts, all four judges do get on well off-screen.

"I think we're all quite protective of each other although the gloves do come off on a Saturday night," he explained.

"We have a go at each other, we have a few jokes and we pick on each other, but none of it comes off the stage. It's all for the fun of the show."

The X Factor Live Shows start tonight at 8pm on ITV1. The Jonathan Ross Show, featuring Gary Barlow, Nicole Scherzinger, Stephen Fry and Taylor Swift follows at 10.20pm.

:worship: Nicole made a grave mistake.

I'm really liking Gary this year, what with his choice of acts and now this. Seems like he's the only one who has a bit of sense.

I'd take him seriously if he didn't champion Frankie Cocozza all last series and sent home his best acts home at judges houses and week 1. :idc:

It's all for publicity anyway, everybody knew he didn't like Rylan and will slate him no matter what tonight. meh.

Tbh even Rylan must think in the back of his mind (having seen the other boys performances') that he has been chosen as the joke act this year.

Rylan brings a certain 'zing' to the show. He's not the best singer but I'll look forward to seeing what he is going to do next week if he stays, and I think he will. It takes all sorts, and he's certainly entertaining. I think he'll be around for a while.
I prefer him to middle of the road boring acts like Jade and C Poole.

precisely, everyone who actually follows this show with any passion for betting markets knows that the judges have sod all say in which acts go through. Its the powers above that choose the acts, the judges are just scripted puppets put into place for entertainment

I am just pleased Gary has speeded up his talking when giving the comments, however,I disagree totally with him as to Rylan.
Rylan gave his all on the show last night, he wasn't brilliant by any means but he was a long, long way from being one of the worst of the night.

Gary may be a good songwriter and singer himself but at times he is very far from being fair as to other people. Last night was no exception.

Gary's just putting on an act. In a few weeks he'll LOVE one of Rylan's performances.

He's reading off the well thumbed Cowell script.
