View Full Version : FINALLY

Shaun

So I made a long-winded post about how I'd had no student loans or grants paid to me about a month ago and everything seemed quite dire then... so imagine my surprise when I found out today that it could take up to 30 working days for anything to be paid to me :)

I uh... let's see.

I've not been able to pay any rent.
I've not been able to buy a bus pass.
I've not been able to buy books.
I've not been able to buy a rail card, or any other travel cards or student cards.

All I'm currently living on is whatever my mum can afford to send me each week - which, as a widowed mother and guardian of 3 (and then me) on low income, isn't exactly a lot [don't get me wrong, I'm not ungrateful, she's literally saving me from starvation right now, and I love her unwaveringly for that]

I don't even know what I'm posting... I've sent off emails to just about everyone at my university because I've been unable to travel into uni and attend lectures and seminars... hence my 24/7 presence on here, really :/ ... and obviously this'll get to the stage soon where I'm failing assessments. Thankfully not yet. And since I'm retaking I'm not miles behind - I have good ideas of what the assessments require, because I passed them this time last year :p I just went to pot in the spring...

But uh, yeah, I thought I should give you fair warning because I'm about as desperate and angry and frustrated as I've ever been in my life and I'd just like everyone to send me hugs and tell me I'm pretty and pretend that my life's not a total ****ing misery and in need of an abrupt end.

awww  Could you get a part time job to tide you over?

What do student services say?

Marc

Sucks being a student. But luckily I had no financial problems whilst I was there. I feel for you!

Life is not a misery and in need of an abrubt end <3.

Shaun

There're quite a lot of leafleting and brochuring jobs apparently so I've had a quick enquiry about those because I live pretty much in the middle of the city so wouldn't need to travel far. There's also a cafe advertising that doesn't ask for experience so I'll look into that. :pipe:

I've generally been meaning to get a part-time job anyway just because with student finance as my only income it doesn't leave me much opportunity for money to play with.

Niamh.
05-11-2012, 01:50 PM
cafe sounds good, should be more sociable hours than a bar as well

Kizzy
05-11-2012, 02:14 PM
Cafe hours will clash with lectures...
Get bar work, lie and say you have experience if they ask.

 things will get better Shaun, just stick in there. Try and get some work in the meantime...

Here's a couple of vacancies in Next in Bath.. next is ideal for students as you have say 8 set hours a week you must work but you update their staff portal with any hours/days you're available to work and get given overtime accordingly.

Oh and you is so pretty! :)

..I'm sure you've exhausted every possibility Shaun..there are quite a few student help websites....?

Open a student bank account with an interest-free overdraft facility before you start uni. You can use this to tide you over until your loan turns up.

Contact your university's student advice centre and ask to discuss your options with a funding officer. They may be able to arrange a short-term loan in very extreme circumstances. Some universities will also supply you with a letter for your landlord/lady explaining the situation.

Learning how to budget instead of blowing your loan in the first week is also essential. "In freshers' week, your spending goes crazy," says Andrew. "Get to know your area to stop yourself getting ripped off by taxi drivers. Find out which taxi firms give discounts. Set a budget for food - mine's £20 - and make sure you shop in places like Morrisons."

Finally, if you need to get a job then do it as soon as you can, as part-time jobs get snapped up quickly. Make sure your CV is up to date and you have plenty of copies to hand out to prospective employers

..anyway, I'm going to look up some possible jobs in Bath...and I'll be back in a minute to tell you how are amazing you are....because you are....!!!!!

Sometimes i just buy Bulks of things from from store we have here called " That's Entertainment " and then sell them on Ebay for double the price and they still go fairly quick, I'd suggest Matched betting as well which is probably the best way to make money from nothing and there are a few good review sites that pay you as well ( Haven't used them for ages though )

I'm having problems with student finance too. 2 weeks since I submitted my evidence for assessment and it still hasn't been processed.

The backlog wasn't this long last year, quite irritating but I'm just living off savings at the moment. It'll tide me over for a little while.
