absolutely sh%tting myself for an obama win....its mega tight...main worry is over healthcare for the 50 million uninsured people...also worried over american neo-con empirialism resulting in endless wars....stem cell research is vital, cleaner energy is vital, regulating the corrupt corporate and banks is beyond vital...not really interested in gay issues as I think gay people now have all the rights and should quit moaning....the other issues are matters of life and death...

Going to be glued to my laptop, love election nights both sides of the Atlantic. Praying for an Obama win... seems likely, Huffington Post have him down for 271 very likely electoral votes (need 270 to win) and with about 75 more up in the air. Romney's only on 191 secure.
Obviously that's just all predictions based on polls, though most polls are tipping in favour of Obama in the run up to the election:

The American presidential election is a complete and utter farce, one of the most modern countries in the world with an election process designed and developed over 200 years ago. It bears no relation to the modern world it does not even allow any American vote to actually count for either candidate directly. It basically means for each state the majority of the popular vote wins all the electoral college votes designated for that state..???
Wtf does that mean ?? Well different states were given more or less of these Electoral College votes depending on their perceived importance. It means the popular vote in States like California will always tip toward the Democrats and the popular vote in Texas will always swing towards the republicans. So the losing popular votes on these states count for nothing.
What a farce as the whole election boils down to winning the popular vote in just a few swing states..!!!
Get rid of this ridiculous outdated undemocratic system and replace it with a one person one vote = most votes wins system...!!!

Well it's still more democratic than the UK. You don't even get to vote for your leader in any way shape or form. Gordon Brown was your PM for a year, remind me again when he was elected by anyone? No one in the UK has any say at all in your elections. The Parties get to decide. You can only vote for your local MP. Now let's talk about the House of Lords... they arn't elected by ANYONE and they serve for LIFE. so no one in the UK has any right to criticize our democratic process, thank you.

The only thing I care about on the California ballot is the proposition that deals with the death penalty. I do hope my fellow Californians choose to do away with the death penalty. That's the only thing i regret not voting on though.
California will obviously go for Obama, he doesn't need my vote. California will continue to be a blue state without my vote. If there was any chance at all that Romney could take California, then i'd be voting, but there is no chance.

No no I was paying attention, I was merely pointing out to reinforce my earlier post that you as a voter in California , if you wanted to vote for Romney to win your vote would have little impact in that state as the majority popular vote will pretty much always be Democratic . Clearly you are an Obama supporter.
I also support Obama as I feel he inherited a huge mess 4 years ago and needs a bit more time to carry forward his plans. Also I think Obama understands the problems of the US and how to carry the US forward in today's world.
Romney..?? Well he just frightens the hell out of me...!!!!

and...it'll never happen because the states with lesser populations will get the shaft. I'm serious you'd basically need California,Texas,NY, basically the top 5/10 in order to win. Not all the states would be represented.
Even if more fair for the Rs in Cali or the Ds in a deeply R State.

As American citizens wait to learn which presidential candidate - either incumbent Barack Obama or his Republican opponent Mitt Romney - will occupy the Oval Office for the next four years, David Dimbleby reports on proceedings in Washington, DC, with Emily Maitlis showing every result as it comes in. Katty Kay heads a panel of experts to provide the latest analysis, and Jeremy Vine speculates on how the outcome will affect the US. BBC correspondents report back from the crucial battleground states to find out why people voted as they did, and there are immediate reactions from the Democrat and Republican camps.
Chat thread for tonight's proceedings if anyone's planning to stay up. You can discuss other channel's offerings if you wish but quite clearly the BBC's will be as per usual far and away the best. I have limited knowledge of American politics but I'll be watching as much as I can.
Looking forward to some Jeremy Vine graphics and Dimblebot action.

The vote is today, polls close tonight and results filter in throughout the night/early morning (whatever you want to call it).
I believe it's different in the US in the sense that different state's polls close at different times.
Might merge this with the thread in Serious Debates, better to keep all election talk in one place I think and people will want to talk about the result as a whole for a while after, not just the BBC coverage of it
