That explains why the Xtra Factor interview was pre-recorded, then.

This has been done for years, I remember Susan Boyle's performance was pre-recorded too because she had to go to New York I think.
Question is how does it bloody work?!

even going to the trouble of making sure the judges outfits were exactly the same.

They seamlessly cut to a pre-recording at some point.
I'm just wondering if Dermot constantly saying they're gonna be on-stage was pre-recorded, since the crowd would have gone skitz if he lied to them...

They record the performance at a eariler live show.
Idol and X Factor US have it all the time. Watch closely, if the judges are not there and the table is gone more than likely it's a prerecorded performance.

I wonder who will actually be performing live tonight

A lot of the performances seem to be pre-recorded this year. Apparently Taylor Swift was too, and someone else that I cant remember.

...is this really a thread, let alone a story? I thought it was common knowledge that their performance was pre-recorded last night.
I actually was looking out for the point at which it cut back to live, and it was when Dermot was stood on the little side strip alongside the judges' table and said 'once again...One Direction!' and really sarcastically emphasised it by fist pumping obviously as a little joke to himself because they'd clearly all just not watched them perform. Watch it back...Dermot finishes his chat with them, runs off down that side strip and then it cuts to another camera shot at which point it becomes live. It was seamless but you can spot it if you know what you're looking for.
Question is how does it bloody work?!
Quite easily. Judges/Dermot dress in the same outfits as when it was pre-recorded. Same as the Xtra Factor interview except Caroline's shoes had changed.
Taylor Swift was also pre-recorded.
They seamlessly cut to a pre-recording at some point.
As soon as the One Direction VT had finished.

OK I get it how it works now!!!
Niall is now the best member of the band because he doesn't have a gimpy tattoo

But why on earth would you go to watch in the audience?
You get to see them perform for 2 minutes and then that's it? lol
All a bit pointless really.
I laughed last night when Liam was saying "All these lovely faces out here" because I thought they'd performed to an empty audience and the screams we were hearing were from the live audience watching them on screen. lol

So that annoying girl in the audience must have been acting
lmao at fans who went last night thinking 1D would be there
I'm pretty sure if say One Direction are to appear in Week 6, they'd come in on a live show in like Week 4 and it would be recorded with that audience.

There is a few occasions this year which can prove performances were live, when Ne-Yo performed earlier I had seen him live during the afternoon - which proved it was real.
