Oh it's the DM, would that be the same paper who say teachers have no control etc etc on another day.
Time out rooms are used and not against the law here in England. They are used if a child has become a danger to others or themselves, and a member of staff will always remain outside the door.

It sounds like a pretty sensible solution to dealing with an out of control 9 year old if you ask me, apparently he was kicking the teachers. It's the parents who should be embarrassed about their childs behavior imo. My son is almost 9 and there is no way in the world he'd ever dream of kicking his teacher

Unfortunately teachers are up against it as some of these little darlings can do no wrong, at 9 he will know right from wrong.

I'm with you lot - he's probably an obnoxious and unruly tyke who ruins lessons for the other kids .....

they can not touch the kids but they can
..it was a room, not a cupbard...that's quite normal in most schools when a child is endangering themselves or others...ideally you would remove all of the other children from around the child, but that's not very practical to move 30 or so children and find somewhere for them, so the child is usually removed to a place of safety like an empty room...

She did nothing wrong, maybe the parents should look after their bratty offspring and she wouldn't have done such a thing.

6 members of staff suspended?.... This is ridiculous, should have just called the parents and got them to take their kid home!
How on earth are they supposed to teach, in a situation requiring action for the protection of a childs immediate safety....what can you do when faced with a child behaving like this?...

Personally I think the other 29 parents should send the police round to charge the kids parents for not bringing him up properly, if another kid had been injured and the school had sat back and done nothing they would be charged with negligence, its a no win situation.
Sounds like a decent solution to the kids behaviour that has been blown way out of proportion, usual crap these days tbh.

Yeah, this. I hate the way pupils get away with so much these days and if a 9-year-old boy is going to be aggressive towards a teacher, does he not deserve to be put in a room for 10 minutes?
It always has to be someone's fault. :bored:
..it's not a 'punishment' though..we don't know the circumstances or any details about the child, who could have severe behaviour difficulties..by what the article says, I think they appeared to do the right thing and isolate him for his own safety and everyone else's but I would imagine it's for that reason and not as any form of punishment, which wouldn't be allowed...
So what lesson did that kid learn at school?
He learnt that he can misbehave, and if any of his guardians try to discipline him, they will be the ones that get punished.

It's amazing how much discipline had changed over the years. When I was at primary school, teachers were still allowed to smack etc..in fact one of the best teachers we had ruled by fear...she had a thing that we called the shakermaker, she used to hold you by the shoulders and shake you....it's absolutely horrific to think about now but at the time it was one of those things, she also used a slipper... She retired when the school stopped teachers from physical punishment..it was the way she worked.. We even had a fairly wicked dinner lady....a nice quiet timeout room would have been bliss...

Discipline is fine, but i hate hitting. It's just wrong. Locking a kid in a room by himself seems a bit over the top, but there's no real harm done.

..it's not really a nice quiet time out room though Annie..from my experience any child hates being in that room...we don't have a lock as such but I can understand why this school did because a child who has 'lost control' will try anything to get out of there...I don't know the details about the incident reported but it wouldn't surprise me if that child had behavioural problems...those could possibly be caused by a learning difficulty which would cause extreme frustration as children are not able to express themselves the way older people do..some children are unable to follow structure the way others do....they can't always help their 'rages' and although they do need to have consequences to their actions, they're not necessarily naughty children...

In such cases you have to ask yourself then if the classroom is the right environment for children with these difficulties in the first place maybe?
